5 reasons you should visit Japan during the winter season!

Japan is most notably popular for its spring cherry blossoms and golden autumn leaves, but here’s why you should visit in winter instead!

1. Snow!

For the ski lovers, Japan is a paradise of snowy slopes and ski resorts during the winter. One of the most popular places to see the beautiful snowy mountains of Japan is at the GALA Yuzawa Ski Resort in Niigata prefecture. Some of the views from the cable cars are absolutely breathtaking and truly capture the essence of the phrase “winter wonderland.”

2. Visible Mountains

People are often disappointed at the visibility of Japan’s mountains, particularly Mt. Fuji, during the hotter hazy seasons of the year. During winter, this problem no longer exists as the air becomes clear and the mountains can be seen from a distance. Thus, if you’re a mountain lover like myself, I’d highly recommend saving your Mt. Fuji and Hakone trips for the winter in order to get the best views!

3. Crisp Cold Fresh Air

Not only is the air notably clearer but it is also quite fresh during this time of year as all signs of humidity and air moisture evaporate. What’s left is a cool breeze of fresh air that makes your body feel clean inside and out as you breathe. As someone who sweats uncontrollably in Japan’s humid summer months, I love the relief that comes along with the cold season of winter!

4. Winter Wear!

I’ve always found it easier to warm up in winter than cool down in summer (especially Japan’s humid summer!). Unlike some countries such as Australia where winter is not so cold and never snows, Japan’s is a true winter in that you will need some high quality jackets and maybe some thermals to get by. It’s also a time to get onboard Japan’s huge winter fashion obsession and get yourself a big trench coat with some trendy scarves, beanies, and gloves.

5. Comfort Food & Drinks

Speaking of getting comfortable, nothing says winter like a piping hot bowl of oden! This authentic Japanese dish consists of steam boiled seafood, egg, and assorted vegetables in a savory soup. During winter (and the colder parts of autumn) many convenience stores, restaurants, and food stands take the initiative to sell hot seasonal foods such as oden and sukiyaki which taste best when they physically warm you up in the cold. Additionally, vending machines start offering hot beverages and soups such as coffee, tea, cocoa, and corn soup!

Of course, if you are planning to visit Japan, you’ll need a way to get around the country as efficiently and affordably as possible. Japan Rail provides an abundance of travel passes to suit your travel needs. So whether you are traveling individually or as a group, the JR Pass is every traveler’s go-to for getting around and making the most of your time in Japan!
