5 reasons Kitakyushu is the most underrated city in Japan

Without a doubt, Kitakyushu is the most naturally beautiful city I’ve ever seen in Japan, if not the world. Here are 5 reasons why that is.

1. Endless Mountain Ranges

The mountain ranges couldn’t get any closer in Kitakyushu, wherever you go you’ll find mesmerizing silhouettes of these majestic mountains all around you. Given the city’s location at the northernmost point of Kyushu Island, the area is surrounded by the beautiful blue waters of Japan’s eastern sea.

I recommend doing regular walks during the day while you’re staying in Kitakyushu, as it is the best way to see all the natural surroundings in full visibility. Personally, I love to take the time to sit outside at one of Kitakyushu’s boat ports and gaze at the endless mountains and ocean stretched out as far as the eyes can see.

2. Iconic Monuments

We always hear so much about Osaka Castle and Himeji Castle, but no one ever talks about Kokura Castle in the heart of Kitakyushu. This beautiful castle takes on features of both Osaka Castle and Himeji Castle, sporting a tall stature and a black-and-white color scheme.

The surrounding castle moat is absolutely stunning, sparkling beautifully in the reflection of the sunlight and hosting a myriad of colorful lively koi fish. Surrounding the area are serene walkways and vibrant cafes that allow you to soak in the beauty of Kokura Castle, and the best part is there are no crowds here no matter the time of day or year!

3. Unbelievable Viewpoints

The mountains of Kitakyushu are not just for show, you can hike up to the top of them to enjoy unbelievable views of the entire city! At the mountain’s peak, you can see a concrete playground spread before your eyes, extending all the way out to the Sea of Japan.

I strongly recommend climbing to the top of Mt. Komonji for the most spectacular view of Kitakyushu I’ve seen thus far. It’s not an easy climb, but its infinitely rewarding views from the peak are arguably the best I’ve seen in all of Japan!

4. Beautiful Coastal Walks

Something about the ocean and mountains makes for a perfect match! Kitakyushu is absolutely filled with stunning coastal walks that are super-accessible no matter where you’re staying in town.

From Kokura station, you can take a scenic walk along the Sea of Japan and enjoy the boat ports and fishermen in action along the way. I recommend checking out Enmeiji Rinkai Park for an amazing seaside hangout spot and a fantastic choice for anyone with kids that want to play in the playground.

5. Delicious Udon Noodles!

I couldn’t end this list without mentioning food, after all, isn’t that what we all live for? Kitakyushu is home to an abundance of udon noodle restaurants, comprising thick-cut noodles in a savory broth and various types of protein options.

Whether you’re craving seafood, tempura, chicken, or beef, chances are there is an udon shop in Kitakyushu that’ll fulfill your needs! I recommend Popo Niku Udon if you’re in Kokura and happen to be a fan of Dragon Ball!

Of course, if you are planning to visit Japan, you’ll need a way to get around the country as efficiently and affordably as possible. Japan Rail provides an abundance of travel passes to suit your travel needs. So whether you are traveling individually or as a group, the JR Pass is every traveler’s go-to for getting around and making the most of your time in Japan!
