5 reasons to visit Universal Studios Japan even without a ticket

Universal Studios Japan is more than a bunch of rollercoaster rides and popcorn stands. Here are 5 unique reasons you’ll love USJ in Osaka.

Whether you’re a fan of Universal Studios’ work or not, you may want to keep the famous theme park on your to-do list when you come to Japan.

Indeed, Universal Studios Japan offers a unique and, I would even say, authentic experience that you simply won’t get at other USJ branches around the world!

The best part is you don’t even need an admission ticket for these exclusive Japanese attractions!

1. A Snippet Of Japan

Once you arrive at Universal Studios station, you’ll feel like you’ve entered an international hub of enthusiastic tourists from every corner of the world!

People of all cultures and backgrounds gather in a mutual love for Universal Studios and, more importantly, a love for Japan.

The entire complex of Universal Studios Japan is an experience in itself, offering up delicious Japanese classics such as Sushiro, Mos Burger, and Bikkuri Donki.

Perhaps the best part is that the street is designed to make you feel you’re in the heart of a busy city street in Japan.

Pop-out signs, neon lights, and big Japanese kanji characters can be seen on either side as you walk down the main street of Universal Studios Japan.

2. Huge Shopping Complex

Of course, no one wants to be outside on a hot summer’s day (or a freezing winter’s day for that matter).

So why not head into the big shopping complex and enjoy access to some of the most popular international and local brands in clothing and accessories?

There are also specialty stores for Universal Studios merchandise that can be found in the shopping mall.

Naturally, Japan puts its twist on everything, so there is plenty of anime and manga merchandise available here too.

The building has three floors of shops, cafes, and restaurants that are accessible to the public, so don’t worry about buying a ticket to access any of this!

3. Relaxing Cafes

If you’re not a fan of the energetic (and often noisy) atmosphere at USJ, you can duck into one of the many cafes for some peace and quiet.

Again, you can get a great snippet of Japan by opting for one of their exclusive brands such as Saint Marc Cafe instead of the usual Starbucks.

Serving up delicious beverages and pastries, I’d recommend Saint Marc Cafe for a refreshing iced matcha latte on a hot day with a classic croissant.

If you’re after a nice view too, you could head upstairs to the cafe’s second floor and enjoy watching people lose their minds on the roller-coaster!

4. Fun Arcade Stations

Okay, it might not be the most “authentic” experience in the strict sense of the word, but arcades do play an integral role in Japanese society.

In a country that loves to “gamify” things, experiencing a Japanese arcade station is one of the best ways to find out what Japan is all about!

There are no age restrictions here as you’ll find the smallest of toddlers and the slowest of grandparents having an equally great time at USJ’s arcade station.

Have a go at the countless claw machines and you may just win yourself a prized Pikachu plush toy like this lucky lady here.

5. Delicious & Unique Restaurants

Top off your trip to Universal Studios Japan with a delicious feed at one of the many Japanese or Western-style restaurants on offer.

Given Osaka is famous for its delicious takoyaki (octopus dumplings), I’d recommend checking out Takoyaki Park on the second floor of the shopping complex.

If you’re extra hungry, head up to the top floor for an authentic Japanese yakiniku barbecue experience!

What I found amazing about this restaurant was the inclusion of other cuisines in their menu.

For instance, in addition to Japanese beef cuts, you could also opt for Korean-style beef and thick chunky American beef too!

Indeed, Universal Studios Japan is a place for authentic and unique dining experiences and is a great way for an “express Japan” trip!

Final Thoughts…

All-in-all, if your time in Japan is limited, Universal Studios Japan allows you to experience a compact packaged version of the country and try all the popular restaurant and cafe chains in one place!

Of course, if you are planning to visit Japan, you’ll need a way to get around the country as efficiently and affordably as possible. Japan Rail provides an abundance of travel passes to suit your travel needs. So whether you are traveling individually or as a group, the JR Pass is every traveler’s go-to for getting around and making the most of your time in Japan!
