Real Mexican food is a real struggle to find in Japan, but thanks to Roti Chicken & Jackie Tacos, you can experience it right here in Kyoto!
A short walk from Kyoto’s Shijo station, Roti Chicken & Jackie Tacos can be found on a quiet street in the Shimogyo ward. Offering authentic Mexican cuisine, I had the pleasure of trying their signature taco dish that had gained much popularity on social media.
Nice Wall Art
From the moment you walk in, the setup of the restaurant totally takes you off guard with its beautiful Mexican-inspired wall art. Calaveras, which is Mexico’s iconic art featuring skulls, symbolizes the beauty of death and rebirth, a reminder to enjoy every moment of life while staying steady and composed in one’s actions.
Ambient Seating Area
The seating is really cozy with wooden tables and stools, while the ambiance is calming and aesthetic with light brown and beige color schemes. There is also plenty of religious symbols on the wall, such as crosses and photos of Jesus, typical of Mexico’s majority Catholic population, which really brings that whole Mexican aesthetic to Japan!
Authentic Mexican Ingredients
As a complementary starter dish, we received a small plate of tortilla chips and guacamole dip.
Simple as it is, I immediately got a good feeling of the authenticity of the food here, after all, Mexican restaurants in Japan typically replace corn chips with rice.
No, this was not a typical taco raisu (taco rice) dish you often find in Japanese Mexican establishments, it was the real deal.
Delicious Chicken Taco Plates!
We decided to order Roti Chicken & Jackie Tacos’ signature dish, a complete set featuring chicken tortilla wraps, pulled chicken on taco shells, and salad, accompanied by rotisserie chicken drumsticks, steamed rice, salsa, and even a slice of pineapple! A little pricey at 2,500 yen per plate, when you realize how full and energized you are at the end of it, you’ll happily pay that amount again!
