Many foreigners dream of working in Japan some day, but sadly many have their dreams shattered upon experiencing the struggles and hardships.

Having worked in Japan for the good part of three years, I can tell you the experience is somewhere between a dream come true and a living nightmare! Some days are filled with complete bliss and sheer amazement at the fact that you are living in one of the most naturally scenic countries in a culturally rich society. On the other hand, you are a foreigner who struggles to fit into this culture or earn a high salary, the low cost of living in Japan is overshadowed by your Western expenses back home, such as mortgages and other bills.
Thus, the question remains – is working in Japan as a foreigner truly worth the experience? Let’s find out!
The Heart Must Be In The Right Place

Indeed, living in Japan can be tough as a foreigner, particularly if you aren’t so well-versed in the Japanese language. Job opportunities are scarce and wages are low, so you’ll need to adapt a minimalist lifestyle in order to get by. That being said, if you’re anything like me and are driven by cultural experiences more than financial gain, then you may find quite a lot of fulfillment making the move to Japan, even for a temporary time. It also helps if you find a job at a cultural hub like I did with Sowaka Luxury Hotel, that way you can enjoy the serenity of ryokans, kimonos, and bonsai gardens every day at work!
Make Time For Exploring!

Of course, no one wants to spend all their time at work, even if it is in a country you once dreamed of living in. If you can get by on part-time hours, even if it means making sacrifices and living frugally, I would 100% recommend you do so as it’ll make your time in Japan more meaningful. Most full-time workers here are so exhausted by the end of the week that they spend most of their free time drinking their sorrows away. Make time for meaningful activities like hiking, visiting shrines, or getting involved in cultural activities, and you’ll feel enriched without the need for high-priced luxury experiences.
So, Is Working In Japan As A Foreigner Worth It?

All in all, if you’re fascinated by Japanese culture and the yearly trip to Japan just doesn’t cut it for you anymore, I’d say at least try getting a Working Holiday Visa if eligible; otherwise, go for the full Work Visa and dive in, knowing you can return home at any time! You truly have nothing to lose when it comes to the Japan move, so if you feel the slightest curiosity about living abroad in one of the world’s most in-demand travel destinations, take the first step and look into job opportunities for foreigners!
