When Is Peak Travel Season In Japan?

Japan does not have a singular peak travel season, but rather multiple peaks throughout the year based on ideal weather and specific events.

Japan is generally a popular country for tourists all year round. Even in its most undesirable season, summer, it still sees its fair share of visitors due to lower flight prices around that time. Nevertheless, there are a few peak travel seasons that you want to be wary of as they’ll affect things like prices, flight availability, and restaurant/event bookings.

Cherry Blossom Season – The Biggest Spike

Easily the most popular season of travel for Japan, and for good reason, is the cherry blossom season. Each region has about a 1-2 week bracket in which the cherry blossoms are in bloom, and it is within those time frames where flights and accommodation can often be booked out or become scarce. That being said, springtime in Japan is not too overcrowded, save for the cherry blossom brackets, so you can still enjoy nice weather and uncrowded spaces outside the blooming periods.

Autumn – Popular From Start To Finish

In contrast, autumn is a well-balanced season where popularity is pretty consistent from start to finish. The end of summer signals the beginning of optimal weather, much like spring, where the sun is out, and a cool breeze persists as Japan’s brutal humidity goes out the door. The autumn leaves are truly spectacular, and there are so many more species thereof than the cherry blossoms, typically lasting much longer and bringing more of a color spectrum to the natural atmosphere.

Christmas & New Year’s – Popular By Circumstance

Japan is by no means a “Christmas country” in the same way that the United Kingdom or the USA are. Hence, I say this season is popular only by circumstance, that is, the fact that most Western countries around the world have their work leave around this time, making it ideal for an overseas vacation. While there is a certain Christmas spirit vibe in Japan, the period is not taken so seriously and most citizens still attend work as normal. That being said, if you do plan to visit Japan during this time, I’d suggest going where the snow is, such as Nagano or Sapporo, for a real winter vibe!
