What is the best season to visit Japan?

A land of distinctive seasons and drastic scenic change, one cannot help but ponder what truly is the best season to visit Japan?

As someone who’s mostly lived in countries like Australia and the UAE, I truly appreciate the distinctive seasons that Japan has to offer. From scorching summers at the beach to snowy winter wonderlands, it’s a country that always has unique scenic beauty to showcase.

Spring – Warm & Pretty

The beauty of Japan’s cherry blossoms is undeniable, and coupled with perfectly balanced weather where jackets are optional, you’ve got a winner of a season!

However, there is a catch with spring in Japan, and that is the fact that the cherry blossoms are but a fleeting display that barely lasts for a week in full bloom.

Nevertheless, spring is still a fantastic season to travel to Japan, even outside of the cherry blossom bloom, simply for its nice weather, clear skies that accentuate all of Japan’s natural beauty from the mountains to the rivers.

Summer – Hot & Sweaty

Truthfully, summertime in Japan is my least liked season of all, despite having some redeeming qualities.

The main cause of my disdain for the Japanese summer is the unbearable humidity that has me sweating like a pig within two minutes of standing outside.

On a positive note, summer is a time where beautiful sunflower gardens pop up around farmlands and in the city, making it a great time to visit places like the Kyoto Botanical Gardens.

If you visit places near the coast, such as Kamakura, you will experience the beauty of Japan’s beaches and seaside cities during summer too.

Autumn – Cool & Crisp

The sounds of autumn leaves crunching against your feet with every step; there’s nothing like it!

Autumn is a time when the air is crisp, the leaves are a warm but passionate shade of golden brown, and the beloved Japanese yaki-imo or “roasted sweet potato” is in season.

Quite possibly Japan’s best season of all, you’ll find the months of October and November particularly ideal in terms of weather, as the summer humidity tends to linger a little during the first autumn month of September.

Winter – Cold & Cozy

Depending on which part of Japan you are in, the levels of snowfall will differ significantly, though you’ll likely experience at least a little bit of it.

The further up north you go, the more likely this is to be the case. Cities like Nagano and Sapporo are classic examples of how Japan turns into a winter wonderland blanketed in snow.

While it can be painfully cold during this time, a thick winter coat will have you enjoying the magic of Japan’s winter without the icy cold suffering.

My favorite part about winter in Japan is the way vending machines and convenience stores start selling more hot drinks like canned coffees and soups, and soul-warming dishes like oden.

My Verdict…

For the brilliant combination of long-lasting natural beauty, ideal temperature, and delicious seasonal foods, my pick for the best season to visit Japan is autumn! A close second and honorable mention for me is winter, for this season has a similar vibe to autumn in terms of invoking a “cozy” feeling with winter wear and whatnot, though unless you’re in the more snowy regions of Japan, the natural beauty simply cannot compete with the golden magic of autumn.
