Amagase Forest Park is home to some of Kyoto’s best scenery

A place where families and friends gather for hiking and camping activities, Amagase Forest Park is a scenic wonderland in Uji, Kyoto.

In the heart of Kyoto’s Uji city nestled between mountains and rivers is the Amagase Forest Park. A popular destination among locals, it’s a favorite for camping, hiking, and observatory activities.

Amazing Hiking Trails

Numerous hiking trails exist in and around Amagase Forest Park, many of which lead to stunning city views of Uji.

Many of these trails circle Makiozan or “Mt. Makio,” meaning they typically have an ascending path that leads to magnificent views!

Hiking through these trails gives a sense of inner peace as the preserved natural environment surrounds you in such an intimate proximity.

Mountain Views

Even if you don’t go on any hikes, you can still enjoy amazing mountain views due to the sheer altitude of Amagase Forest Park.

Many families choose to drive up here and simply enjoy the scenery without exerting any physical effort (I call them cheaters!).

You’ll find plenty of seating areas, rubbish bins, and public toilets here, making it ideal for picnics or any gathering of your choice.

Amagase Dam

Perhaps the highlight of Amagase Forest Park is the incredible view of Amagase Dam in all its glory. The beautiful Uji River meets the Seta River at this intersection, separated by a man-made stone wall that helps prevent floods and preserve the beauty of Mother Nature.

Umanose Observation Deck

Another fantastic viewing spot is the Umanose Observation Deck, a small wooden platform along one of Makiozan’s hiking trails. At a higher altitude, you get some incredible views above the mountains and of Uji city down below. With the gentle breeze cooling you down after an effortful hike, it’s a great spot to rest with a nice beverage in hand.
