Asahiyama Memorial Park embraces Hokkaido’s pure white snow

It’s absolutely incredible how much Hokkaido changes in the snowy winter months, bringing a whole new look to Asahiyama Memorial Park!

Snow in Japan is one of the most beautiful displays of nature that you’ll see in this world. The last time I visited Asahiyama Memorial Park was in the summer of 2023, but this time around in February 2025, the hidden gem of Sapporo has taken on a whole new look bringing the magical beauty of Japan’s winter.

Thick Powdery Snow!

Upon returning to Asahiyama Memorial Park this year, I was shocked to see the staircase to the top of the mountain completely absent underneath a blanket of thick snow. Even the big information board was partially buried in the snow and needed to be tied down for support.

Magical Night Vibes

Despite the freezing cold temperature and slippery slopes on the way up, the pathway was absolutely stunning. Street lamps light up the way to reveal a snowy desert of pure white and bare tree branches hanging over the walkway. While I did see the usual “beware of bears” sign, I’d assume they’re hibernating deep in the mountains for winter.

Knee Deep in Snow!

Asahiyama Memorial Park is almost unrecognizable buried several inches in snow. Our feet and legs were absolutely freezing as we trekked through the thick snow toward the peak. I would not recommend this walk for the weak. Understandably, most people were commuting here by car around the back entrance, but we did not have such luxury.

A Night to Remember!

The top of Asahiyama Memorial Park offers one of my favorite views in Hokkaido. At night, the dazzling lights of Sapporo city lay stretched out as far as the eye can see. You can even spot the iconic Sapporo TV Tower from here in its brilliant purple Christmas lights. Again, the effect of winter’s snow makes the view exponentially more brilliant and a hot vending machine coffee significantly more enjoyable!
