Maruyama Park is a paradise of colorful autumn trees native to Japan. Here, you can enjoy the incredible aesthetics of scarlet Momiji leaves.
Located in Kyoto’s geisha district of Gion, Maruyama Park is a haven of stunning autumn leaves. This year in 2024, the autumn foliage was quite delayed, starting around mid-November and even extending into the winter days of early to mid-December.
Maruyama Park is a Scarlet Paradise
Just around the corner from the Yasaka Shrine, Maruyama Park is free for the public to access. Spotless walkways take you through gardens of stunning autumn trees that come in many shapes and sizes. The park is also home to some aesthetic bonsai trees that are well-kept by the council.
Where the Sun Rises
The effect of sun rays piercing through the red Momiji leaves is truly a sight to behold.
Unlike typical maple leaves, Momiji leaves have sharper edges and lower density, making them ideal for creating the komorebi effect (Japanese term for “light filtering through trees”).
It’s particularly nice to see these scarlet sensations in the early hours of the morning as the sun rises, for this is when the sunbeams are most potent and the air is most clear.
Experience the Zen of Kyoto
With plenty of seating areas at Maruyama Park, you can sit just about anywhere and enjoy the peaceful presence of colorful autumn trees.
The area around the pond is particularly beautiful as you can see these tree branches reflected against the clear water.
Also, for your comfort, there are vending machines, public toilets, and even food outlets during the day at Maruyama Park!
Iconic Maruyama Park
Indeed, autumn is the time of year when places like Maruyama Park are at their prettiest. Flowing rivers sparkle against the sunrise as rich red autumn leaves shine bright to captivate and inspire the people of Kyoto.
