Exploring the streets of Fukuoka, the northern shore of Kyushu

Fukuoka is known for its beautiful coastal scenery, yatai food stands, and ferries to Korea. Here’s what to expect with Fukuoka’s street life.

The streets of Fukuoka that surround Hakata Station are quite unique in their architectural layout and aesthetic design. From my perspective, it carries a sort of European vibe with its classic Victorian-era street lamps and wide open walkways which differ significantly from the typical narrow footpaths in Japan.

Hakata Riverain Mall

One of the hallmarks of Fukuoka, particularly the Hakata district, is the Hakata Riverain Mall, which stands tall between Hakata Station and Hakata Bay.

Here, you can enjoy some of Fukuoka’s finest dining with seasonal ingredients harvested from the local farms of the prefecture as well as plenty of retail stores, including your favorite international brands.

From the upper levels of Hakata Riverain Mall you can also enjoy scenic views of Fukuoka from the many restaurants and cafes inside.

Unique Combini Items

It’s no Hokkaido milk, but these unique dairy products from a Lawson in Fukuoka were pretty delicious for such simple items.

I had never seen these outside of Fukuoka, though I can’t say for sure they are exclusive to the prefecture.

In any case, the fresh milk on the left was certainly more natural in its taste than your standard Meiji milk, while the one on the right was more of a dessert featuring vanilla flavor and 86% milk content.

The Scenic Hakata Bay

My favorite part about Fukuoka will have to be Hakata Bay, home to a beautiful port town that looks out to the vast Sea of Japan. In spring, the walkways are abundant with cherry blossom trees, which brilliantly frame the iconic Hakata Port Tower – a prominent symbol of Fukuoka prefecture.

Of course, if you are planning to visit Japan, you’ll need a way to get around the country as efficiently and affordably as possible. Japan Rail provides an abundance of travel passes to suit your travel needs. So whether you are traveling individually or as a group, the JR Pass is every traveler’s go-to for getting around and making the most of your time in Japan!
