You could call it the “Oreo of Japan,” because Black Thunder is a Japanese chocolate brand that’s taking the world by storm!
Black Thunder is a Japanese confectionary brand specializing in cocoa-flavored cookie bars infused with Japanese-style rice puffs and coated in chocolate.
Recently, FamilyMart released its limited-time “Black Thunder series” which consists of an abundance of dessert items that are made using Black Thunder’s iconic crunchy chocolate cookie bars.
These are my top 5 Black Thunder favorites from FamilyMart…
1. Chocolate Cookie
Perhaps the most iconic of these goods is the Black Thunder Chocolate Cookies.
This item delivers a powerful crunch with every bite, comprising a generous coating of chocolate and crunchy rice puffs.
The middle bit provides the soft touch of cookie dough, while the interior is filled with delicious chocolate chips!
Honestly, the Black Thunder Chocolate Cookie is an absolute winner in all dimensions.
A cookie so overloaded with external and internal toppings that it could practically pass for a triple-layered cake, the hard and soft texture dynamics are so harmoniously intertwined.
Just be sure to use a plate or have a tissue handy because this bad boy is a messy one!
2. Florentine (Furorantan)
Next, we have the Black Thunder Florentine, or as the Japanese pronounce it, Furorantan.
Typically, a Florentine refers to a biscuit stacked with dried fruits and nuts, traditionally a Spanish delicacy.
Well, the Black Thunder Furorantan is like the extra crunchy extra chocolatey version of exactly that!
While you could indeed taste the dried fruits and nuts, the added crunch of rice puffs and chocolate coating is just as potent.
Definitely not your typical Florentine biscuit, this Black Thunder variation takes things to a whole new level with more intense flavors and crackling textures!
Personally, I prefer the chocolate cookie over the Florentine, but this one surely has a greater appeal for those seeking the ultimate crunch!
3. Chocolate Tiramisu
Now moving onto something a little less crunchy and perhaps “elderly-friendly” is the Chocolate Tiramisu.
Located in the pudding section of FamilyMart, you can find these gourmet Black Thunder Chocolate Tiramisu cups for just 338 yen (including tax).
The topping features Black Thunder’s iconic Oreo-esque chocolate cookie bits, but it’s certainly far easier on the teeth in this form.
Beautifully decorated with hardened chocolate sauce, this item definitely wins the presentation contest.
It’s more than a pretty face though, because Black Thunder’s Chocolate Tiramisu features delicious mocha-flavored pudding between layers of chocolate cake.
I talk a lot about milk pudding and souffles in Japan, but this one is arguably my new favorite type of gourmet dessert from Japan’s convenience stores!
4. Double Cookie Sandwich
A slightly more intimidating dessert but offered at a lower price point (248 yen) is the Black Thunder Double Cookie Sandwich. Featuring one of the most unique-looking desserts I’ve come across, it is quite literally a chocolate cream sandwich that uses chocolate-coated cookie dough as the “bread.”
It’s a little softer than it looks so I wouldn’t worry about breaking your teeth on this one, but it certainly has that classic Black Thunder crunch with the bits of cookie on top.
The inside is filled with a light chocolate cream which, if I’m being honest, is not as rich or sweet as I was hoping for (though I’m sure others prefer it that way).
Overall, it was a delightful dessert, particularly for the top and bottom layers which resembled the Black Thunder Chocolate Cookie in some sense.
5. Chocolate Cookies n’ Cream Ice Cream
Last but certainly not least is Black Thunder’s Chocolate Cookies n’ Cream Ice Cream cup.
An absolute must-get for ice cream lovers, this item gave me something of a McFlurry vibe from McDonald’s.
However, the Black Thunder cookie biscuits definitely have a richer chocolate taste than Oreo, though perhaps not as sweet as its American counterpart.
The presentation of this dessert looks nothing less than a delicious snowy mountain ready to be indulged in.
Once you get past the Oreo McFlurry-like top half of the cup, you are met with a rich milk chocolate ice cream layer at the bottom half.
Furthermore, the base of the ice cream cup consists of a delicious layer of chocolate bits, reminiscent of the Oreo Storm from Hungry Jacks for my Australian readers.
Of course, if you are planning to visit Japan, you’ll need a way to get around the country as efficiently and affordably as possible. Japan Rail provides an abundance of travel passes to suit your travel needs. So whether you are traveling individually or as a group, the JR Pass is every traveler’s go-to for getting around and making the most of your time in Japan!
