The Fushimi Canal is a hidden gem in Kyoto’s Fushimi ward. The section between Kangetsukyo and Chushojima stations is particularly tranquil.
The Fushimi Canal is home to Kyoto’s riverboat cruises that pass through the beautiful cherry blossom trees of spring. A rather long canal indeed, there are many spots where you can enjoy peace and serenity and the absence of crowds. As you walk along the path, you will pass under bridges where trains pass through every 10 minutes or so. Don’t worry though, there are plenty of spots far away from the clickety-clack sound of trains on tracks.
Fairy Tale Gardens
At times, gorgeous gardens fill up the space on either side of the walkway to conceal the canal, though this is temporary. You can feel a real fairy tale vibe as the trees hang overhead to create a “tunnel of nature” of sorts, almost like a wedding ceremony atmosphere, particularly with the rosey flowers sticking out of the bushes.
Shiroko Time!
There’s a spot where you can sit on these big stone steps and enjoy the calm tranquility of the Fushimi Canal.
This spot is parallel to the Kakinokihama Park which is a small playground where parents often take their kids to play. Depending on your level of grumpiness, the sound of kids playing can either add to the tranquility or piss you off to no end.
For me, I happened to be in a pleasant mood when I did my morning walk along the Fushimi Canal, so the joy of the children was a plus. I cracked open a hot can of shiroko (sweet red bean soup) and enjoyed this fine beautiful morning in Kyoto!
