Sakura season is upon us, and Japan is now enjoying the festivities of Hanami – a long-standing tradition of cherry blossom viewing!

Kyoto is Japan’s ancient capital and to this day remains as one of the most naturally scenic prefectures in the entire country. It’s no surprise that the best cherry blossom spots for hanami can be found right here in Kyoto.
Check out these 5 locations to get your sakura fix in 2025!
1. Maruyama Park

Maruyama Park is one of Kyoto’s oldest parks and home to an abundance of cherry blossom trees during the months of spring. In their full bloom, they create a truly magical effect that decorates the walkways and surrounding ponds for a breathtaking experience. You can also enjoy the food and drink stalls that are set up in celebration of hanami.
2. Sewaritei (Yodogawa Riverside Park)

The Yodogawa Riverside Park is a large piece of land that runs alongside the Yodo River, a long body of water that extends 75 kilometers across the Kansai region from Kyoto all the way through Osaka prefecture. Sewaritei is a section of this massive park that features giant cherry blossom trees that are maintained by the local council. For just 100 yen, you can enjoy full access to the grounds with magnificent views of riverside sakura trees and pop-up stores selling street food for the hanami festival.
3. Fushimi Canal

A lesser-known cherry blossom viewing spot is the Fushimi Canal, which branches off the Uji River toward Kyoto’s southern regions. Vintage boat cruises operate along the canal, taking you through beautiful valleys of cherry blossoms while circling the block around Fushimi Port Park. Best accessed via Chushojima station, the vibe here is truly something unique, and, of course, there are more popup stalls to enjoy for the cherry blossom festival.
4. Fushimi Momoyama Castle

Fushimi Momoyama Castle is one of the most underrated castles in all of Japan in my humble opinion. Located in the Fushimi-Momoyama district, it was once considered the resting place of Emperor Meiji. Now, it’s more of a local sightseeing spot, and during spring, it’s absolutely brimming with bright pink cherry blossom trees that beautifully frame the royal structures. It’s also worth visiting Fushimi Momoyama Castle at night as the trees and structures are lit up with bright spotlights for a mesmerizing visual effect.
5. Chushojima Station

This may be a repeat of number 3, but in particular, the part of the Fushimi Canal that is a must visit is the Benten Bridge just around the corner from Chushojima station. Here, you get iconic shots of the petals falling into the river and you can stand at an elevated position on the high grounds and be at eye-level with the top of the cherry blossom trees!
Of course, if you are planning to visit Japan, you’ll need a way to get around the country as efficiently and affordably as possible. Japan Rail provides an abundance of travel passes to suit your travel needs. So whether you are traveling individually or as a group, the JR Pass is every traveler’s go-to for getting around and making the most of your time in Japan!
