Hiri Hiri Soup Curry delivers the iconic flavor of Hokkaido

Soup curry is the staple dish of Hokkaido prefecture and a local delicacy loved by all. Read about my experience trying Hiri Hiri in Sapporo!

Located in Sapporo’s Odori district just around the corner from the annual Sapporo Snow Festival, Hiri Hiri Soup Curry is a standout restaurant that does justice to Hokkaido’s local delicacy!

Food for the Soul

Soup curry is a Hokkaido dish made using Japanese curry powder combined with coconut milk, tomato paste, garam masala spices, garlic, ginger, and peppers.

The result is a deliciously seasoned broth that is not too spicy but full of flavor that seeps into the whole vegetable and meat ingredients.

Fresh broccoli, pumpkin, potato, eggplant, and shitake mushrooms are just some of the many typical ingredients you’ll find in a bowl of Hokkaido soup curry.

You also have a choice of protein typically between roast chicken or seafood prawn, though Hiri Hiri also has options for beef and pork.

Set Pieces

I’ve had my fair share of soup curry feeds in Hokkaido, but Hiri Hiri stands out for its simple but effective approach.

Both their menu and restaurant are designed with simplicity in mind. They offer nothing but the basics while seating you in an ambient environment.

Every soup curry dish comes with a serving of rice. It is recommended to eat by taking half a spoonful of rice and scooping up some soup curry and vegetables to enjoy together.

Vegan Options

The vegetables are really the spotlight ingredients of soup curry, so good that even a carnivore like me opted for the vegan option.

I really enjoyed the unique variety of ingredients used at Hiri Hiri. Unlike the soup curry store I went to near Maruyama Park, this one came with lotus fruit and shitake mushrooms which are not typical soup curry ingredients.

So if you’re looking for a great soup curry experience in Hokkaido and are feeling spoiled for choice, try Hiri Hiri for a humble and soulful dining experience!
