Japan is an anime society, no matter what anyone says

From subtle anime references wherever you go to dedicated anime channels to the iconic Akihabara, Japan will always be an anime society.

Hardcore anime fans are often disappointed to hear Japan is not as obsessed with anime as they are. This has led to widespread beliefs that the country producing anime doesn’t share the same love and passion for it.

From my experience, the Japanese are far more obsessed with anime than the West will ever be. Once you notice the subtle anime references in even the most professional and formal environments, you’ll begin to realize that Japan is indeed an anime society.

Subtle (and not so subtle) anime references in common areas

Detective Conan Tour Pass at Narita Airport

Upon arriving at Narita Airport in 2014, the first thing I noticed was a poster advertising a Tour Pass inspired by the popular anime Detective Conan. While the airport does not resemble an anime theme park by any means, the subtle inclusions of pop culture icons were everywhere.

In 2018, I arrived at Haneda Airport only to be greeted by a walkway decorated with Hello Kitty flags. In fact, the airport even features an iconic Hello Kitty merchandise store. It’s also quite common to see things like anime-themed stores, gaccha machines, restaurants, and cafes in popular cities like Shibuya, Harajuku, and of course, Akihabara.

Anime is frequently used in marketing

One of the things that truly makes Japan an anime society is the way they use the medium in marketing.

From TV commercials to billboards and posters used in trains, buses, and restaurants, anime references can be found everywhere.

Walking through the streets of Tokyo, I was delighted to spot a ramen restaurant that used my favorite anime Dragon Ball in its advertising.

Dedicated “anime-only” TV channels

Flicking through the television channels in my hotel room, I was once again delighted to see my favorite anime broadcast nationwide!

Sadly for foreigners, these programs don’t come with English subtitles, but it was nice to see anime being played on regular TV.

Akihabara – A town dedicated to anime

Needing no introduction, Akihabara is quite literally an “anime town.” If you thought Japan was not obsessed with anime, think again.

Of course, covering the whole country with “in-your-face” anime visuals would be chaotic.

Thus, Akihabara was built for the public to immerse themselves in their wildest pop-culture fantasies with no judgment.

Whether you’re a gamer, comic book reader, anime watcher, or music lover, Akihabara will welcome you with open arms!

Of course, if you are planning to visit Japan, you’ll need a way to get around the country as efficiently and affordably as possible. Japan Rail provides an abundance of travel passes to suit your travel needs. So whether you are traveling individually or as a group, the JR Pass is every traveler’s go-to for getting around and making the most of your time in Japan!
