Japan’s best rivers and lakes ranked by scenic beauty

Japan is the land of mountains, rivers, and lakes, so I thought I’d piece together my 5 favorite spots in Japan to enjoy views of the water.

Crystal clear waters are a divine feature of Mother Nature that allows us to clear our minds and de-stress from the pressures of daily life. Having explored many prefectures and cities in Japan, I sought out these five stunning rivers and lakes that offer the sense of blissful serenity that we all long for.

1. Lake Biwa (Biwako)

Lake Biwa is an enormous body of water that encompasses parts of Kyoto and Shiga prefectures in the Kansai region. Home to the Omi-Maiko Beach, it’s a place where one can enjoy the buzzing vibes of barbecues and picnics on one end, and the peaceful tranquility of the calm side of the lake on the other end.

2. Uji River (Ujigawa)

The Uji River is located in Kyoto prefecture in the city of Uji, commonly known as the green tea capital of Japan. Stunning mountains surround scenic valleys with a calm and serene atmosphere that’s ideal for farming tea leaves for the Japanese-style matcha we all know and love. The waters around the Uji Bridge are flowing peacefully, and one can enjoy a sense of tranquility sitting by the rocky shores below.

3. Kamo River (Kamogawa)

Perhaps the signature river in all of Kyoto, the Kamo River, stretches across the entire prefecture and acts as a point of reference for those in Kyoto’s main city area. There are many different sections of the Kamo River, some more lively than others, so you can decide whether you want the vibe of peaceful tranquility or musical street performers as you enjoy the river’s natural beauty.

4. Kawaguchi Lake (Kawaguchiko)

Lake Kawaguchi is easily the best spot to enjoy the natural scenery of Mt. Fuji, Japan’s most iconic natural wonder. Particularly during the winter, when the air is crisp and the skies are clear, you can enjoy Mt. Fuji looking at its snow-capped best while the big Rising Sun of Japan brilliantly reflects against Lake Kawaguchi for a sparkling effect that is mesmerizing and comforting.

5. Sumida River (Sumidagawa)

Last but not least is my top pick for nighttime river viewing, and that’s the Sumida River located in Tokyo’s Asakusa district. Featuring stunning views of the Sumida Bridge and Tokyo Skytree tower in its glowing blue colors, it has the amazing effect of lighting up the river with a brilliant blue sparkle. A great spot to enjoy a lively chat with friends or simply reflect on life in solitude, the Sumida River is a must-visit, particularly in the quiet hours of the night.
