These 5 Japanese KitKat flavors are unique, strange, and delicious!

Japan is the motherland of every KitKat flavor under the Rising Sun. These 5 flavors in particular are super delicious and a little weird!

Many food products in Japan have an Otona no Amasa variant, meaning “adult sweetness.” As you’d imagine, it caters to Japan’s elderly population by featuring reduced sweetness levels and more potent flavors.

KitKat is all aboard the Otona no Amasa train with an abundance of flavors with a great majority of them offered in the “adult sweetness” edition. With that in mind, here are my 5 favorite Japanese KitKat flavors you must try!

5. Feuilletine (Otona no Amasa)

Feuilletine is a crispy sweet dessert made from thin crêpes originating in Europe.

This Feuilletine KitKat flavor is among the Otona no Amasa series and offers a light taste with crispy Feuilletine bits on the inside for an extra crunch.

For those looking for a mild variant of KitKat that can be enjoyed without a surge in your blood pressure, this might be the one for you!

4. Deep Cocoa Scent (Otona no Amasa)

Moving onto something a little sweeter, we have the Deep Cocoa Scent KitKat flavor, also part of the “adult sweetness” range.

This flavor uses a higher percentage of cocoa ingredients which makes it a top choice for lovers of dark chocolate.

As a dark chocolate fan myself, I quite liked the reduced sweetness and increased cocoa with this one, and it definitely had me feeling like a “chocolate connoisseur” of sorts.

3. Matcha Green Tea (Otona no Amasa)

Of course, you haven’t tasted Japanese KitKat until you’ve had its iconic Matcha Green Tea flavor!

Unlike the ones you may have come across in the West, this is a deeper and more bitter variant of matcha green tea with a reduced sweetness.

Not for the faint-hearted, this Matcha Green Tea KitKat has a potency of flavor that is reserved for only the strongest of green tea lovers!

2. Ice Cream

Moving on to something a little more tame, KitKat’s Ice Cream flavor is an absolute winner for me despite being on the sweeter side of the spectrum.

It’s truly uncanny how they’ve managed to mimic the taste of vanilla ice cream with this flavor, from the potent milky taste right down to the refreshing cold aftertaste.

I’d highly recommend the Ice Cream KitKat flavor for people of all ages, but be careful, because they are addictive!

1. Cacao 72%

Lastly, we have my number one choice of Japanese KitKat flavors, the exquisite Cacao 72%.

This deep, rich, and bitter chocolate contains an abundance of polyphenols which have a range of benefits including reducing blood clots, improving brain function, and lowering the risk of heart disease.

Trust the Japanese to sneak health benefits into an otherwise indulgent confectionary!

Polyphenol benefits aside, I chose the Cacao 72% as my top choice purely because of the deep rich cocoa flavor it offers as well as a perfectly balanced level of sweetness which is not too low and not too high in my humble opinion.

Of course, if you are planning to visit Japan, you’ll need a way to get around the country as efficiently and affordably as possible. Japan Rail provides an abundance of travel passes to suit your travel needs. So whether you are traveling individually or as a group, the JR Pass is every traveler’s go-to for getting around and making the most of your time in Japan!
