Katsura River – the underrated riverside walk in Arashiyama

The Katsura River is Arashiyama’s most spots of scenic beauty, yet is so often overlooked by the likes of the bamboo grove and monkey park.

Easily one of the most beautiful rivers in all of Japan, the Katsura River is a tributary of the Yodo River, alongside the Uji River and Kizu River, stretching miles and miles from Osaka to Kyoto prefecture. The river is best viewed from Kyoto’s famous tourist destination of Arashiyama, where the stunning calm waters encircle the thick green forests of this scenic city.

Start from Togetsukyo Bridge

If you thought Kyoto’s Kamo River was impressive, then the Katsura River is on a whole other level! The width appears to be at least twice, if not thrice as wide as the Kamogawa, and the surrounding natural forests and villages are significantly more captivating both in beauty and sheer size.

Escape the crowded bamboo grove!

On the northern end of the Togetsukyo Bridge, you can enjoy a scenic riverside walk along the Katsura River, bypassing the Monkey Park for a more wilderness experience of Arashiyama.

The beautiful green forests take on shades of gold and red during the autumn season, and they reflect brilliantly against the waters for a magical effect.

From the hustle and bustle of endless tourists swarming the bamboo grove, the Katsura River walk provides a quiet escape where one can truly appreciate the scenic beauty of Arashiyama, one of Kyoto’s most scenic gems.

Enjoy scenic riverside walks

Who needs the Arashiyama Bamboo Forest when there are bamboos all over Kyoto! As you walk along the Katsura River, you’ll find interesting spots that feature bamboo sticks with a similar aesthetic to the ever-so-crowded Arashiyama Bamboo Forest.

It’s also cool to see the river boats docked up and ready to go, a popular cruise option for those traveling between Kameoka and Arashiyama. These traditional wooden boats give off a vintage Japanese vibe akin to the days of fishing villages (don’t worry, fishing is still very much alive and well in Kyoto!). So the next time you’re in Arashiyama, go off the beaten track and discover its true beauty with a walk along the Katsura River!
