Why Kyoto’s Silver Pavilion is superior to the Golden Pavilion

Kyoto’s Silver Pavilion (Ginkaku-ji) is often outshone by its Golden Pavilion (Kinkaku-ji) counterpart, but here’s why that’s simply not true.

It may not be as bright and shiny as the Golden Pavilion, but there are several reasons why the Silver Pavilion is the superior temple of choice.

Located in the heart of Kyoto in the naturally beautiful district of Higashiyama, the Silver Pavilion (often referred to as Kinkaku-ji or Jisho-ji) offers a far more soulful experience that goes beyond the temple structure itself.

Nicer Gardens

First of all, the surrounding areas of the Silver Pavilion are incredibly beautiful and far more interesting than the bland pond of the Golden Pavilion.

Serene gardens surround a rocky pond that is filled with an abundance of bonsai trees that could only be described as a work of art. A blissful stroll around this Japanese-style pond is an experience that the Golden Pavilion simply does not offer.

Stunning Views

The Silver Pavilion experience doesn’t end with the garden walk, but rather with an incredible view of Higashiyama as you continue along the path on a steady incline.

You can see beautiful green-covered mountain ranges in the distance and the rooftops of traditional Japanese homes scattered across the landscape.

Interesting Exhibits

Not to take another jab at the Golden Pavilion, but you simply won’t see cool exhibits of zen artwork there like this unique display on show at the Silver Pavilion.

Called Kogetsudai or “moon viewing platform,” this sand-made cone supposedly reflects a shadow onto the pond that resembles that produced by the moon. It’s also commonly believed that it was designed to be a depiction of Mt. Fuji.

So there you have it folks! The next time you’re in Kyoto wondering if you should visit the Golden Pavilion, then be sure to scrap that idea and give the Silver Pavilion some love instead!
