This Kyoto temple nestled in the forest will take you to another time

Called the Zuiko-in Temple, this mesmerizing landmark is better known as the temple nestled in the forests of Mt. Daimonji.

Zuiko-in Temple is located at the starting point of the Mt. Daimonji hike via the Philosopher’s Path entrance point. Nestled in the thick forests of Kyoto’s outback, it is a place that provides detachment from reality and spiritual bliss.

Statues, Lampposts, and Incense

Nothing gets you in the mood of traditional Japan like monk statues, vermilion lampposts, and the hypnotic smell of incense.

Zuiko-in Temple has all the basics of a typical Kyoto temple but manages to operate in the remote woods far from civilization.

As you walk along the declined footpath, the surrounding trees appear taller and taller, hovering above you for an unexpectedly immersive forest experience.

Entrenched in Thick Forests

Continuing along the path will quickly lead you to the main temple structure which, if naught for the colorful flags surrounding it, would appear to be camouflaged with the gradient of the forest.

Thick tree trunks quite literally penetrate the Zuiko-in Temple building which rests atop a stone wall across a small walking bridge. The site itself is truly spectacular, and you may find yourself fantasizing about life before the modern era.

A Unique Bathroom Experience!

The fun doesn’t stop there! Wait til you’ve tried this vintage wooden bathroom on the grounds of Zuiko-in Temple.

Don’t worry, despite being in the middle of the forest, it still comes with a modern toilet and bidet (trust the Japanese to make it happen!).

From the unique glass sink bowl to the bar of soap wrapped in a fish net and, best of all, a spectacular view of endless forest trees outside the window, it truly is a bathroom experience to remember!
