Exploring Maruyama Park – Kyoto’s oldest and “greenest” park!

A hidden gem that only reveals itself to those who explore beyond the famous Yasaka Shrine, Maruyama Park offers zen and beauty unmatched.

If you ever find yourself visiting the Yasaka Shrine in Kyoto’s geisha district of Gion, then you are only a few steps away from one of the most magnificent showcases of Mother Nature in Japan!

Up close and personal with the thick forests of Higashiyama, Maruyama Park offers scenery that truly captures the essence of Japan’s natural beauty.

Behind the Yasaka Shrine

The Yasaka Shrine is one of the oldest and most precious shrines in Kyoto.

Home to the annual Gion Matsuri festival, thousands gather to see the shrine’s beauty on a daily basis.

If you walk along the grounds of Yasaka Shrine and through the back entrance, you will arrive at the front entrance of Maruyama Park!

Gorgeous Ponds

The first thing you will see when you enter this stunning work of nature is a large pond and a stone bridge that crosses over to the other side.

Maruyama Park is engulfed by lush greenery with thick mountainous forests surrounding the vicinity. Walking around the pond offers a tranquil experience as you indulge in the calming sounds of nature.

A River of Stone

One of the more unique aspects of Maruyama Park is this “stone river” featuring a plethora of rocks and pebbles along a canal-like route leading into the mountains.

Truthfully, this is where a river stream once flowed through the park, but the water has been temporarily halted in a restoration attempt to clean the bottom of the river and optimize its beauty.

Personally, I find the current “stone river” look quite appealing!

The Perfect Rest Stop!

If you’re visiting Kyoto for the first time, chances are you’ll be busy exploring the streets of Gion, the majestic Kamo River, and the breathtaking Kiyomizu-dera Temple.

Fortunately, Maruyama Park offers the perfect rest stop to rejuvenate! Plenty of stone seating areas lie spread across the park and there are many vending machines and nearby shops to refresh your spirits!

Of course, if you are planning to visit Japan, you’ll need a way to get around the country as efficiently and affordably as possible. Japan Rail provides an abundance of travel passes to suit your travel needs.
