As a writer, the best thing about Japan is that there’s so much to write about! Minamioshima Park invokes feelings that must be expressed.
I was on a long journey on foot to see the Manpukuji Temple in the Obaku district of Uji. Starting my trek from Fushimi-Momoyama, I had been walking for an hour when my legs started to feel the pressure, particularly as I’d just finished a workout at the gym prior to this adventure. That’s when, like a mirage, the Minamioshima Park revealed itself to me.
Shelter in the Wilderness
Okay, it’s not literally the wilderness, but the pin-drop silence of this part of Uji sure had me feeling like it was.
Furthermore, when you step into the safe haven that is Minamioshima Park, you cannot help but feel a sense of isolation from civilization.
All that accompanies you is the rustling of the autumn tree leaves, the sound of the wind’s breeze, and a shelter reminiscent of Stonehenge.
Castle Vibes
It really does have a “take you back in time” effect when you see the Minamioshima Park shelter.
A metal grid roof, big stone pillars, and concrete slabs where you can sit down all point to the feeling of a castle shelter.
Sit and recuperate with a beverage from the park’s vending machine and you will feel like a worn-out knight from the Medieval times (after walking for an hour I know I did!).
The Joy of Autumn
The way the grounds are completely covered in crisp, brown autumn leaves truly captures the vibe of the season. As autumn transitions to winter, the combination of golden leaves and dead branches brilliantly depicts the passing of time and the flow of Mother Nature. Poetic sentiments aside, the swings are pretty cool too!
