Dunkin’ Donuts and Krispy Kreme “donut” compare to Japan’s Mister Donut when it comes to authentic doughnuts that keep things exciting!
Mister Donut is Japan’s largest doughnut chain despite being founded in America and, ironically, owned by Dunkin’ Donuts.
However, since most Mister Donut stores in America have transformed into Dunkin’ Donuts, Japan has become the country most associated with Mister Donut and is often mistaken for having founded the brand.
Amazing Doughnut Varieties
As I always say, Japan puts its unique twist on everything, regardless of whether the brand is originally from a foreign country, so you best believe you’ll find red bean and matcha flavors in a place like this!
Mister Donut not only offers the usual suspects like sprinkled and jam-filled doughnuts but also a variety of red bean-filled options, yaki-imo (baked sweet potato) treats, and mochi ring doughnuts.
The “Brulé” Doughnut
Among the wide range of unique doughnut styles and flavors is the sweet potato Brulé doughnut.
If you’re a fan of Brulé and doughnuts then this is an absolute dream come true for you, cleverly integrating the two treats to give you the best of both worlds.
A scrumptious dough base made of sweet potato ingredients and styled with a unique design rests on top of a glazed layer of roasted sugary Brulé for the ultimate combination.
Autumn is a great time to be in Japan because of the widespread sale of seasonal goods such as sweet potato treats, many of which can be found at Mister Donut!
Great Coffee!
In addition to an incredible range of doughnuts, Mister Donut offers amazing beverages including coffee, milk tea, bubble tea, specialty shakes, and more!
I went for the classic “Mister Blend” coffee which was rich, aromatic, and as good as a cup of black coffee can get.
If you’re going on a doughnut-eating spree at Mister Donut, I recommend a non-sugary drink like black coffee or matcha green tea to complement the sweetness of your doughnuts.
Nice Atmosphere
Of course, there was no convincing my brother of that sentiment, who decided to go for the sweetest iced coffee they had!
Between the two of us, we tried a whole bunch of Western and Japanese-inspired doughnuts, covering just about all categories of treats at Mister Donut.
The atmosphere and ambiance of this particular branch in Fushimi, Kyoto was quite relaxing with a contemporary aesthetic.
Business people, school students, and casual friends were all hanging out here at Mister Donut, attesting to the store’s clever layout that suits all occasions!
Of course, if you are planning to visit Japan, you’ll need a way to get around the country as efficiently and affordably as possible. Japan Rail provides an abundance of travel passes to suit your travel needs. So whether you are traveling individually or as a group, the JR Pass is every traveler’s go-to for getting around and making the most of your time in Japan!
