A restaurant that delivers more than a good feed, Bhagwati Taj Mahal is rightfully named so as the experience will have you flying to India!
Indian cuisine is a surprisingly popular and sought-after food in Japan (alongside Italian). Perhaps this is because Indian foods differ greatly from Japanese cuisine and use more potent flavors and spices.
I’ve tried a few Indian restaurants across many prefectures in this country, including Tokyo, Osaka, and even Hokkaido! Yet, none have been quite as memorable as this humble restaurant in the small little town of Mukaijima in Kyoto’s southern regions.
Succulent Tandoori Chicken
When a restaurant puts effort into presentation, you know they actually care about what they do!
Bhagwati Taj Mahal leaves nothing to chance when it comes to exceptional service and customer satisfaction.
From the perfectly cooked tandoori chicken to the sizzling hot plates and the decorations of chopped lettuce, onion, and lemon slice refresher, there is a feeling of thoughtful intention in everything this restaurant does.
Amazing Sides & Beverages
Another aspect that sets Bhagwati Taj Mahal apart from other Indian restaurants in Japan is the quality of their side dishes.
Hot crispy samosas with a delicious spicy tomato dipping sauce will have you thinking it’s the main course!
Of course, the beverage menu includes the usual suspects like mango lassi (Indian yogurt drink) and chai (Indian spicy tea).
Additionally, they also offer interesting desserts such as pistachio ice cream and chocolate naan bread!
Incredible Naan Bread Varieties
Naan bread so good you’ll go nani?! (what?!) with the first bite. Don’t worry, these amazing breads will leave a better taste in your mouth than my cheesy puns.
Speaking of cheesy, I strongly recommend the cheesy garlic naan bread for an absolute burst of flavor!
Unlike other Indian restaurants, Bhagwati Taj Mahal offers truly unique flavors of naan bread in addition to the usual suspects.
Such options include “Kashmir naan” which is a sweet flavor with a coconut shaving filling.
Aromatic Curry
Naturally, an Indian restaurant is only as good as its curry. Butter chicken, chicken tikka masala, and lamb korma are but a few of the many classic Indian curry dishes that the world holds dear.
At Bhagwati Taj Mahal, you can select from a huge range of Indian and Nepalese curries and adjust the spice level on a large scale to suit your specific tolerance levels.
Smooth creamy texture with incredibly potent flavors, the curry and naan bread here is a match made in heaven (it also goes great with their saffron rice!).
As expected, the presentation is once again a solid 10/10, with cool spiral patterns of yogurt and sprinkles of coriander.
Indeed, this work of art has become another hidden gem of Mukaijima in my books!
Of course, if you are planning to visit Japan, you’ll need a way to get around the country as efficiently and affordably as possible. Japan Rail provides an abundance of travel passes to suit your travel needs. So whether you are traveling individually or as a group, the JR Pass is every traveler’s go-to for getting around and making the most of your time in Japan!
