Journey to Nakayama Pond – Kameoka’s secret paradise

In the heart of Kyoto’s most scenic city Kameoka, a touch of paradise is nestled between the mountains of the outer city – the Nakayama Pond.

The journey to Nakayama Pond is not particularly difficult, though it can be if you are trying to get the best views. Located in the heart of Kameoka city, it’s a straightforward route on foot from Kameoka railway station.

Taking the Scenic Route

I say I took the “scenic route” but in reality, all routes to Nakayama Pond are scenic. After all, this is Kameoka. Gorgeous farmlands with bright yellow flowers and grassy hilltops create picture-perfect scenes all along the way.

Don’t miss the turn!

“Don’t miss the turn!” I say for dramatic effect, but you’d be a fool to miss such an obvious turn, especially when there’s a sign and a hiking trail to refer to.

This is the only annoying part of the walk to Nakayama Park in my opinion, as you’ll have to be extra careful of oncoming cars on this narrow road.

Once you make the turn, however, you’re in the wilderness of Mother Nature as all signs of civilization suddenly feel so far away.

Love at First Sight?

Following the path will eventually lead you to a fork in the path. You can either go left and continue your way up toward the Hewadai Observatory Deck, or you can take a cheeky right and cross the bridge to Nakayama Pond!

Nature at its Best!

It truly is nature at its best! The Nakayama Pond is surrounded by a beautiful plantation that shines brightly on a sunny day. Combined with the pure calming waters, sandy shores, and lush green trees, it really is a piece of paradise!

Awesome Rest Stop!

On the hills surrounding the Nakayama Pond is a sheltered area comprising seats and a table. A great place to have lunch and take a rest, you get to enjoy the view of the pond in a safe and secure spot.

Feeling Risky?

For the adventurous ones, there’s an even better spot with more amazing views. Yes, that big rock sticking out of the bushes is the ultimate viewing spot of Nakayama Pond, offering 360-degree views of pure still waters and intimate mountainous forests all around.

Crystal Clear Nakayama Pond!

The Nakayama Pond in all its glory can only truly be experienced and appreciated when you’re in the center of its divine beauty. Indeed, the endless forests stretch out as far as the eyes can see as the sun brilliantly reflects sparkles against the calming waters. creating a soothing effect of a zen-like meditation zone.
