5 obscure sandwiches from Japan’s convenience stores

The Japanese food industry has always been bold and daring when it comes to seeking new flavor sensations, just like these obscure sandwiches!

1. Fruit Sandwich

Starting off the list with one of the most obscure sandwiches I’ve ever eaten, this fruit sandwich combines the texture of kiwi, peach, and apple with the sweet taste of fresh cream.

Kept together by two slices of super soft crustless white bread, Japan’s fruit sandwich actually makes for an awesome dessert if you can look past the strangeness of the concept (you also secure your daily serving of fruit!).

2. Fresh Cream Sandwich

I’ll admit, the fruit sandwich served me well up until I discovered the fresh cream sandwich. Essentially, it took everything I liked most about the fruit sandwich (i.e. the cream) and magnified it to be the main star of the show!

Also, I’m not a huge fan of the whole fruit in a sandwich concept, but I sure do advocate for cream! So if you find yourself at a Lawson (don’t worry, they’re everywhere!) then keep an eye out for this delicious fresh cream sandwich!

3. Minced Meat Cutlet Sandwich

This one may not seem so strange compared to the previous sandwiches, but there’s something about putting minced meat in a sandwich that just seemed a bit odd to me.

Nevertheless, this minced meat cutlet sandwich from Japan’s convenience stores does a great job at keeping it all together, delivering a tasty hit of protein without any mess!

4. Yakisoba Pan

An absolute classic of the Japanese bakery, the yakisoba pan is an iconic delicacy comprising a bread roll filled with fried noodles, mayonnaise, savory sauce, and pickled radish.

Mixing bread and noodles may be a carb overload, but it sure as hell is worth trying for the incredible combination of flavors it offers! If you’re in Japan, don’t leave without trying this local favorite!

5. Belgium Chocolate Cream Sandwich

Lastly, we have one more obscure sandwich to add for the sweet tooth folk, and that is this incredibly mouth-watering Belgium chocolate cream sandwich available at participating combinis and supermarkets.

This is more than a regular Nutella sandwich as it contains high-quality chocolate cream with a rich flavor and perfectly smooth texture that you simply won’t get from a jar of sandwich spread.

Of course, if you are planning to visit Japan, you’ll need a way to get around the country as efficiently and affordably as possible. Japan Rail provides an abundance of travel passes to suit your travel needs. So whether you are traveling individually or as a group, the JR Pass is every traveler’s go-to for getting around and making the most of your time in Japan!
