I’ve spoken about Japan’s exclusive Pepsi Refresh Shot before, but I was surprised to find another Japan-only variant known as Pepsi Nama!
At first glance, you’d think it was just a regular can of Pepsi with a cool new look, however, this is a completely different beast.
After you’ve skimmed through this article, you’ll understand why Pepsi Nama is a unique drink, how it differs from regular Pepsi, and whether you’d like to try it the next time you’re in Japan!
What Is Pepsi Nama (Or “Pepsi Raw”)?
If you can’t read Japanese, it’s almost impossible to recognize that this is not a regular can of Pepsi.
After all, there’s no English text to advise you of this as all you’re left with are the words “Pepsi” and “Cola” on the front.
However, the big Japanese character in the middle “生” (pronounced nama), translates to “raw,” suggesting an unfiltered taste of some sort.
There is some truth to this because Pepsi Nama is in fact made with a blend of unheated spices in an attempt to keep the flavor “natural” and “refreshing.”
How Does It Fare Against Regular Pepsi?
After trying both types of Pepsi within a reasonable timeframe, I can attest to the description of Pepsi Nama offering a more “natural” taste.
Since Pepsi Nama is made with unheated spices, the sugary ingredients do not melt and blend completely into the drink, resulting in a less sweet finish.
As such, you get a Pepsi taste that doesn’t have as much of a “sweet syrup” aftertaste, allowing you to feel refreshed without that strong hit of sugar.
In truth, the sugar content is about the same between the two types of Pepsi, so I’d say it’s more of an illusion in terms of the “refreshed” feeling you get with Pepsi Nama.
Nevertheless, there is something to be said about the concept of raw spices versus melted ingredients, and perhaps this is the key to fighting the effects of lethargy and sugar-crashing prevalent with regular Pepsi.
Where To Find Pepsi Nama?
The great thing about Japan when it comes to Western products is they’ll never completely replace them.
Instead, you can find Japanese variants such as Pepsi Nama and Pepsi Refresh Shot in addition to your classic regular Pepsi.
Pepsi Nama can typically be found in select vending machines and convenience stores across Japan, available in standard can or bottle sizes.
Of course, if you are planning to visit Japan, you’ll need a way to get around the country as efficiently and affordably as possible. Japan Rail provides an abundance of travel passes to suit your travel needs. So whether you are traveling individually or as a group, the JR Pass is every traveler’s go-to for getting around and making the most of your time in Japan!
