Known for their premium egg on toast sets, specialty coffee, and soothing matchas, SAGAN Cafe is the best hybrid breakfast joint in Kyoto!
Located in the heart of Higashiyama just a short walk from Gion district, SAGAN Cafe is a humble little establishment that is beloved by the community. Seeing their amazing breakfast sets on display in front of the store, I simply had to walk in and try it myself!
A Calming Ambiance
The first thing you will notice when you walk through the wooden sliding door of SAGAN Cafe is the calm and relaxed atmosphere.
It has a simple design layout with wooden chairs and tables that make you feel as though you are at home.
One of the coolest things about this setup was the menus which are designed like an old newspaper. An interesting creative choice!
Delicious Breakfast Sets!
SAGAN Cafe offers a wide range of breakfast options including western-style eggs and toast, Japanese teishoku breakfast, and baked breads and muffins.
I decided to try their signature egg on toast set which comes with a seasoned salad and a beverage of your choice.
The presentation of the dish was exquisite. A thick piece of lightly toasted, fluffy white bread with two perfectly cooked fried eggs on top and a side of green peppery salad made for a mouthwatering visual.
Perfectly Cooked Egg
I need to go into more detail about this egg because it really left a lasting impression on me.
Finding the perfect balance between runny and cooked is a real challenge when it comes to frying eggs.
SAGAN Cafe perfectly captures this balance between a solid fried egg that maintains its shape but oozes its brilliant orange yolk when sliced open.
The toast is also in the perfect condition to receive the marinate of the egg yolk – soft enough to absorb the runny yolk but toasty enough not to fall apart or become soggy.
Amazing Specialty Coffee
Finally, we finish strong with a delicious black coffee brewed in a vintage ceramic drinking cup.
The crema at the top was very well made, featuring a smooth layer of soft micro-bubbles that ease you into the rich bold coffee taste.
I’m no coffee expert, but even I could tell SAGAN Cafe’s coffee is the real deal. Next time, I’d like to try their matcha tea!
