The Samurai Mac – Japan’s iconic McDonald’s burger

Filled with thick double meat, melted cheddar cheese, and a special Japanese-inspired sauce, the Samurai Mac is a must-try McDonald’s burger!

We’ve all heard of the famous Big Mac, the world’s most-recognized hamburger coming in with two beef patties, an extra bun in the middle, and a helping of special sauce. Well, Japan’s take on this global icon delivers a spicy kick that is intended for a mature audience, helping them to “enjoy adulthood.

When you purchase the Samurai Mac, the first thing that strikes you is the unique blue and black wrapping, possibly a shoutout to the Japanese soccer team a.k.a “the Blue Samurai.” The words on the paper read “Samurai Mac” in English and Japanese (サムライマック), and the design resembles a “Hakama” (袴), that is, a traditional samurai outfit.

First impressions

Upon opening the wrapper, I was met with a burger that closely resembled a double quarter pounder but with some slight differences. Overall, the burger was smaller, but the double beef patties were of a similar thickness and the cheese and onion were ever-present.

The bun was certainly not the typical McDonald’s kind, but rather a toasted poppy seed bun with a soft but crispy texture. The Samurai Mac also appeared to contain a barbecue-like sauce and the beef patties seemed to have some kind of pepper seasoning.

It’s all in the sauce!

It was only after the first bite that I truly understood what this burger was all about. The initial kick was intense as the peppery flavor engulfs your taste buds with a spice that leaves you curious but yearning for more.

The sauce was the biggest X-factor for me though, delivering a roasted soy sauce flavor that was both sweet and savory. Combined with the tender soft pepper beef, the smooth melted cheddar, and the crunch of the onion, the Samurai Mac proved to be a 10/10 burger!
