Sapporo’s Maruyama Park takes on an all-new look in winter

Maruyama Park is practically unrecognizable in winter as Hokkaido prefecture becomes completely blanketed in pure white snow.

In my previous article about Maruyama Park (Sapporo), I explored the final cherry blossoms that were fading away as summer approached. This year, I revisited the iconic park in the freezing month of February, and boy did it hit different.

Magical Walking Paths

Last time I was here, the place was filled with thick trees, concrete walking paths, and flowing rivers under the bridges.

Now, there isn’t a leaf in sight as pure white snow has completely covered the entire premise of Maruyama Park.

At night, it’s especially magical with the streetlights lighting up the walkway and revealing the bare tree branches hanging over the path.

Closed Off Playgrounds

The snow is so thick and of such high volume in fact, that the playgrounds are completely closed off simply from being unplayable (and possibly a hazard). Even more crazy are the park benches that are completely buried by snow (yes, there is a park bench in this picture too).

Snow Art?

Just like in the movies, you can jump into the snow and make an angel by flapping your arms and legs while lying on your back.

If you feel so inclined, Maruyama Park facilitates the making of snow men too, or you can just have a good old snow ball fight!

What I like to do is grab a branch and draw pictures against the snow (better than getting icy snow in my clothes!).

A Night to Remember!

Despite the freezing cold temperatures, I couldn’t pass up an opportunity to try this Coke with a unique Hokkaido artwork from the vending machine.

Whether it’s a cold drink or an ice cream cone, you certainly don’t have to worry about anything melting or going off out here! On that note, if you get yourself a hot beverage, drink it fast because the heat doesn’t last!

It was indeed a night to remember! Maruyama Park is known for its beautiful cherry blossom trees in spring, but I’d argue it’s even more interesting in the snowy blizzards of winter.
