Deep scarlet “Momji” autumn leaves are blooming in Kameoka

Kameoka is an absolute haven of rich and colorful autumn leaves – from crisp golden shades of yellow to deep scarlet red.

Autumn is truly one of the most beautiful seasons in Japan, and no country does it quite like the Land of the Rising Sun. The combination of colorful autumn leaves surrounding rivers and lakes and decorating the mountain ranges is a spectacle like no other.

While you can see these amazing works of art all over Japan during autumn, the best places to visit are where the natural forests are near civilization. The ancient capital of Kyoto, in particular, its scenic town of Kameoka, is arguably the most abundant region for viewing autumn leaves.

Nakayama Pond

Kameoka’s Nakayama Pond is one of Kyoto’s best-kept secrets. I truly cannot believe how this stunning piece of nature is so well-preserved and untouched. The several times that I’ve come here, it was totally empty—devoid of locals and tourists alike. Personally, I think it’s a shame for such beauty to go unrecognized.

In any case, the Nakayama Pond is a fantastic spot to see Kyoto’s autumn leaves. A short walk from Kameoka station, it provides the magnificence of a crystal clear body of water totally surrounded by hilly bushes and tree branches of golden brown leaves.

Rich Red “Momji”

Momji, otherwise known as “Japanese maple leaves” have a unique look that is exclusive to the country and one of the reasons autumn in Japan stands out from the rest of the world.

Unlike Canadian maple leaves, Momji have sharper edges and thinner, pointer shapes.

The effect is a beautiful detailed pattern where the beams of sunlight more effortlessly seep through the gaps of the leaves, creating an awesome aesthetic!

Kameoka Fog Terrace

Hiking up to Kameoka Fog Terrace is a rewarding endeavor, whether you get to see the fog or not.

Not only are the views from the observation deck absolutely stunning, but so are the autumn trees that stand in abundance all along the way.

When a gentle breeze passes through, you may be lucky to see the majestic sight of leaves blowing into the wind, creating a sense of epic adventure and wanderlust.

Autumn Paradise!

Breathtaking beauty is all but underappreciated in Kyoto’s scenic town of Kameoka. While most are busy overcrowding the Arashiyama Bamboo Forest, why not head a couple of stops down to Kameoka and experience the true autumn paradise of Japan!

Of course, if you are planning to visit Japan, you’ll need a way to get around the country as efficiently and affordably as possible. Japan Rail provides an abundance of travel passes to suit your travel needs. So whether you are traveling individually or as a group, the JR Pass is every traveler’s go-to for getting around and making the most of your time in Japan!
