How hiking in Japan differs from other countries

I’ve done my fair share of hiking all over the world, but there are a few unique traits of Japan’s hiking routes that I want to highlight.

Japan is the land of mountains, rivers, and lakes, so I thought I’d piece together my 5 favorite spots in Japan to enjoy views of the water.

Just north of Kyoto is the stunning body of water known as Lake Biwa or “Biwako” in Shiga Prefecture, home to beautiful beaches and resorts.

Just around the corner from Gion-Shijo station by the famous Kamo River, Pontocho Kebab Al Bukhara serves up a succulent halal feed!

Sunflowers are truly a sight to behold in the Japanese summer. These lovely golden petals were spotted in the Fushimi ward of South Kyoto.

Mt. Hiei or “Hieizan” is one of the strongholds of Buddhism in Japan, offering scenic views, historic temples, and tough hiking trails!
