Tokyo Melonpan – the best sweet bread in Japan!

Tokyo Melonpan is a small franchise located in various parts of Tokyo. Their sweet bread is one of the best I’ve ever tasted!

Denoted by its iconic melon pan pop-out, Tokyo Melonpan is located in regions across Tokyo including the cities of Shinjuku, Taito, Chuo, and Chiyoda. The store I visited was located in Shinjuku, and I honestly wouldn’t have noticed it if not for the cool sculpted bread popping out of the building.

Awesome varieties

My eyes weren’t the only ones having fun, but also my nose as the smell of freshly baked sweet bread overcame my senses. As I walked around the corner of the store, I finally saw what all the fuss was about.

What lay before me was a plethora of different melon pans and other bread and pastries lined up on display. From original and chocolate chip melonpans to European croissants and pastries, Tokyo Melonpan had the works!

For those who don’t know, melonpan is a sweet bread originating in Japan. It is known for its crisp exterior and soft interior, though no melon ingredients are involved as it was made to resemble the appearance of a rock melon.

Flawless texture

Melonpan is a delicacy that can be enjoyed in any convenience store you walk into in Japan. However, dedicated bakeries such as Tokyo Melonpan deliver a whole new experience that must be tasted to believe.

The defining elements of the melonpan are its sugar-coated hard exterior and sweet and soft interior. Tokyo Melonpan makes this contrast far more prominent than what you’ll find at a local combini.

Naturally, as a first-timer, I simply had to try their original melonpan without any of the fancy add-ons. Not only was the texture flawless, but so was the temperature, heated just right, so the sweet sugary glaze wouldn’t melt away.

Tokyo Melonpan leaves you satisfied!

As soon as I purchased my melonpan, I knew it was going to be something special. Thus, I needed to find a beautiful outdoor setting and a park bench to enjoy this delicacy.

Needless to say, upon the first bite I already knew the combini melonpans would never live up to this. As I continued to chew away at the sugary crisp exterior and indulge in the fluffy interior, I thought to myself “life is good.”
