Top 5 milk pudding brands from Japanese convenience stores

Japan’s milk pudding culture is a truly potent phenomenon that sees these little delicacies sold everywhere from convenience stores to cafés!

1. Ohayo Milk Pudding

My all-time favorite brand of all things dairy has been and always will be the Ohayo brand and, in particular, their milk pudding varieties with flavors including original, café latte, Brulé, and chocolate among many others!

Using the tastiest and richest milk ingredients sourced from the Channel Island of Jersey, Ohayo milk pudding is by far the creamiest, smoothest, and downright delicious convenience store dessert I’ve ever eaten.

2. Lawson Egg Pudding

Another category of Japanese puddings is the egg pudding range, a type of delicacy you’ll often find at just about any convenience store and even at café establishments.

This egg pudding from Lawson is called Tamago no Purin which quite literally translates to “egg pudding.” Not quite as creamy as the Ohayo range, this Lawson egg pudding offers a unique “yolky” taste that is sweet and slightly marinated with a delicious caramel syrup for an extra kick.

3. TOPS Chocolate Pudding

Another popular pudding brand in Japan is TOPS, and I can attest their chocolate pudding is definitely at a “top” shelf standard (I’ll walk myself out).

I found this chocolate pudding at a FamilyMart in Kyoto and was pleasantly surprised at how deep and rich the chocolate flavor was! I highly recommend it to anyone who is a chocolate enthusiast and enjoys the taste of sweet dairy desserts.

4. FamilyMart Souffle Milk Pudding

Speaking of FamilyMart, they also sell these amazing souffle milk puddings that feature a similar creamy milky core as the Ohayo range but are also topped with a soft battered cake that offers an interesting texture dynamic.

All-in-all, this milk pudding souffle offers a milky taste from start to finish and is more filling than your standard pudding. If you’re a milk pudding and a cake enthusiast then I’d say it would be a real challenge to find a dessert better than this!

5. 7-Eleven Milk Pudding

Last but certainly not least is the iconic 7-Eleven milk pudding that is part of the Seven Sweets range nationwide. Like the souffle variation from FamilyMart, this option features a dynamic of textures that keeps each bite exciting.

Instead of a cake topping, the 7-Eleven milk pudding uses a smooth whipped cream that is thick and rich in flavor. Once you’ve had a few bites, you’ll reach the point of Nirvana when the cream and the pudding meet at a euphoric equilibrium of utter ecstasy of the taste senses.

Of course, if you are planning to visit Japan, you’ll need a way to get around the country as efficiently and affordably as possible. Japan Rail provides an abundance of travel passes to suit your travel needs. So whether you are traveling individually or as a group, the JR Pass is every traveler’s go-to for getting around and making the most of your time in Japan!
