Kameoka is a town that simply cannot be conquered in a day as there’s so much to see! Here are 5 of the best places in Kyoto’s scenic town!
Heiwadai Observation Deck
The Heiwadai Observation Deck is easily the best lookout point in Kameoka. It’s the perfect introduction to the area if you’re new to town as it gives a full panoramic view of the city and natural landscape. From Kameoka station, it’s about an hour’s walk, but can also be accessed by car.
Iwasaka Inari Shrine
The Iwasaka Inari Shrine is located on the same grounds as the Heiwadai Observation Deck, so it’s an easy two birds one stone scenario. Here, you get to transport yourself to another time as you walk through this cultural shrine nested in the forests. Unlike Fushimi Inari-Taisha Shrine, it only takes a couple of minutes to complete the torii gate circuit.
Kameoka Fog Terrace
The Kameoka Fog Terrace is another one of Kameoka’s many amazing observation decks. As its name suggests, it’s an area that becomes engulfed in pure white fog in the early hours of the morning during the cold seasons of Kyoto. Sadly, I haven’t been able to get here early enough to enjoy the misty scenery, but the view of mountains and farmlands is quite impressive too!
Nango Park
Nango Park is a beautiful walkway by the moat of Tanba Kameyama Castle Ruins. It’s a serene walking route with a calm and relaxed atmosphere. During the spring, the trees turn bright pink as the cherry blossoms come out, and during autumn they are golden yellow. There are plenty of benches to sit and relax along the way, and it’s also a rather popular spot for fishing!
Nakayama Pond
The Nakayama Pond is one of Kameoka’s best-kept secrets. About an hour out on foot from Kameoka station, it’s a beautiful body of water in a quiet setting. Surrounded by bright yellow plants, sandy shores, and green mountainous forests, you’ll want to sit here for a while to soak it all in.
Of course, if you are planning to visit Japan, you’ll need a way to get around the country as efficiently and affordably as possible. Japan Rail provides an abundance of travel passes to suit your travel needs. So whether you are traveling individually or as a group, the JR Pass is every traveler’s go-to for getting around and making the most of your time in Japan!
