Kyoto is easily Japan’s most scenic prefecture featuring stunning nature-city hybrid views. Here are Kyoto’s 5 most scenic picnic spots!
1. Mt. Daimonji

Mt. Daimonji is one of my favorite hikes in Kyoto City. It’s relatively easy, accessible, and incredibly scenic! As far as picnic spots go, I’d recommend setting up at the first scenic view when entering from Demachiyanagi station. Unlike the peak of Mt. Daimonji, which gets a little crowded, this spot offers more space, privacy, and also a closer, intimate view with Kyoto City that the summit doesn’t quite capture.
2. Amagase Forest Park

Amagase Forest Park is home to the beautiful Amagase Dam which features serene calm waters of the Uji and Seta Rivers. A lesser-known area especially by tourists, you’ll find much peace and solitude in these parts of Kyoto. About a 45-minute walk from Uji station (or a 10-minute bus ride), it makes for an ideal picnic location for a family as it’s not too strenuous to access.
3. Kameoka Asobi No Oka (Play Hill)

Kameoka Fog Terrace is one of Kyoto’s most unique scenic spots, but few are aware of the Asobi no Oka park that can be enjoyed along the way. A fantastic picnic spot that overlooks mountains and cities, it’s particularly good for families whose children can play at the stylish playground area provided. Some of those slippery slides are absolutely majestic, swerving down like a dragon’s tail with incredible scenic views all the way down. There are also plenty of chairs and tables to set up a good picnic vibe.
4. Yamashina-Uji Intersection

The Yamashina-Uji intersection is a term I coined to describe the diverging point of the Yamashina River and Uji River just outside Kangetsukyo station on the Keihan Railway Line in Kyoto’s Fushimi ward. Magnificent flowing rivers abundant in wildlife from birds to fish and even turtles can be seen in their natural element here. Again, not commonly known by tourists, but a fantastic spot to get some goods from the nearby FamilyMart and set up a picnic by the river.
5. Mt. Hiei

Mt. Hiei always finds its way on the roster when I create lists like this, and for good reason! Home to the UNESCO World Heritage Site Enryaku-ji Temple, it’s an incredible scenic hiking route with stunning views of Lake Biwa and Kyoto’s rural mountain ranges. At the summit of Mt. Hiei are several seating areas where you can sit and let your mind wander at the vastness of Kyoto’s mountainous scenery.
