Underrated items at Japan’s Torikizoku restaurant

As one of the Torikizoku’s most frequent customers, I feel obliged to educate the people on what I believe to be their most underrated items.

Torikizoku is by far my favorite chain restaurant in Japan, but in addition to fulfilling my protein needs with their awesome yakitori (grilled chicken skewers), they also have a few underrated items on offer. Some of these items may be limited edition, but some I know for sure are part of the permanent menu!

Cheesy Chicken w/ Vegetable Ketchup

The yakitori selection at Torikizoku is vast and succulent, offering all types of skewers from marinated chicken to cheesy capsicum!

On that note, one of my all-time favourites is the cheesy chicken with vegetable ketchup and basil oil skewer, a taste reminiscent of pizza!

Sadly, this item is seasonal, typically coming out during autumn and lasting throughout winter, after all, it’s made to keep you warm!

Grated Yam

This next one is perhaps the most underrated item of Torikizoku by a mile, and it’s not even a yakitori dish!

The grated yam is a steaming hot bowl of a pudding-like yam base topped with mayo, seaweed flakes, and egg yolk.

Unlike the previous item, this one is available as a permanent item all year round, though personally I recommend it as a winter warmer!

A Match Made in Heaven!

Grated yam is best enjoyed as a set piece with a bowl of rice, egg, pickled radish, and soup.

Once you’ve mixed the yam with the rice, you can throw in some chicken pieces from the yakitori to make a really tasty rice bowl dish out of it!

My personal recommendation is mixing it with the chicken skin skewer, as this adds a nice crispy dynamic to the otherwise soft texture of the yam.
