Sapporo is one of those cities that stays with you forever. The snowy mountains, Christmas lights, and soul food are some of the best highlights that Japan has to offer. While Hokkaido is quite cold all year round, the best way to enjoy it is in its coldest season of February, when the annual Sapporo Snow Festival takes place!
Exquisite Soul Foods

The food and drink options in Sapporo are truly on another level both in variety and quality. Known for their fresh produce of dairy, some of the tastiest and freshest milk, ice cream, and puddings are made in Hokkaido prefecture. There are also many iconic dishes like soup curry and Jingisukan that are a must-try!

The annual Sapporo Snow Festival typically runs for about a week in early February. Featuring amazing exhibits of snow and ice sculptures, live festivals, and delicious food stalls, it’s one of my favorite free events in Japan to attend. If you’re a fan of Japanese pop culture like Studio Ghibli or even some Western shows like Star Wars, you’ll definitely enjoy the exhibits being showcased!
Dazzling Xmas Lights

Despite being a couple of months after December, the Christmas vibe lingers a lot longer in Hokkaido, particularly in the capital city of Sapporo. Christmas lights and decorations can be enjoyed all around town including the more quiet and isolated streets, creating a rather romantic and fantastical atmosphere.
Of course, if you are planning to visit Japan, you’ll need a way to get around the country as efficiently and affordably as possible. So whether you are traveling individually or as a group, the JR Pass is every traveler’s go-to for getting around and making the most of your time in Japan!
