Only One Day in Tokyo? Here’s How to Make the Most of it!

Everybody knows one day is an offensively short time to explore a place as grand as Tokyo, but if such is your circumstance, then do this!

I would never advise spending just one day in Tokyo, but perhaps you are simply passing through or have a long layover in the capital city of Japan. In such cases, I can forgive you for spending so short a time here, and to express my forgiveness to those affected, please see this short guide to making the most of that one and only day in Tokyo!

Stick To The Yamanote Line

The JR Yamanote Line is the busiest train line in all of Japan, and arguably the entire world. Major Tokyo stations such as Shinjuku, Shibuya, and Akihabara are all accessed via this line. Each of these cities is enormous in size and unique in its atmosphere. Honestly, you could spend an entire day in any one of these cities, exploring unique streets and trying different foods. However, if you want to cover as much of Tokyo as possible in a single day, I suggest spending no more than 1-2 hours in each major stop along the Yamanote Line.

Keep Travel Time Short

The less time you spend traveling, the more time you can spend eating delicious melonpan! Remember, you only have one day in Tokyo, so don’t bother doing any long train or bus trips unless it’s a truly non-negotiable itinerary item for you. At the end of the day, Tokyo is famous for its city life, so I’d say you’re probably not making the most of your one day if you’re going to spend all day going up a mountain to see a shrine (save that for Kyoto!).

Choose Your Poison

Some people come to Tokyo knowing exactly which places they want to go, while others come with an explorer’s mind. For the former, you should definitely spend more time in the city you were fixated on or perhaps researched about. For the latter, stick to my 1-2 hour rule per city and try to get a good high-level overview of what Tokyo is all about. Personally, I would love to spend all day in a city like Akihabara because of my background as an anime enthusiast and gamer, but for others, the town could well be a bore! So try and sus out the Tokyo cities you think will appeal to you the most before committing to one, or otherwise, ride that Yamanote Line and do some exploring!

Be Present, You Can’t Do It All!

The most important thing to remember is to be present at every moment! It’s easy to fall into “FOMO” or fear of missing out when in Tokyo. The truth is, this city is so utterly vast that different things come to mind for different people when they think “Tokyo,” so it really does come down to your personal preferences. One day is nowhere near enough to explore all of Tokyo’s major attractions, cities, and landmarks, but your best bet for covering as much as possible is to go stop by stop on the Yamanote Line and adjust how much time you spend in each city based on how you vibe with it. Remind yourself that you can’t cover everything in one day and focus on enjoying the here and now!
