At 3,776 meters tall, Mt. Fuji stands alone in its majestic beauty, taking on new looks and giving off different aura in every season of the year.
I’ve had the privilege of seeing Mt. Fuji in all of its seasons. I’d go one step further and say I’ve also seen it (and not seen it) at all of its visibility levels. With the exception of the rare occasions when the mountain has zero visibility (which truly can happen in any season), it’s safe to say that Mt. Fuji looks absolutely spectacular, breathtaking, and simply awe-inspiring in every season of the year!
The Iconic Snowy Peak
The first time I saw Mt. Fuji was in the winter of 2018, just a week before Christmas. It was a crystal clear day without a cloud in the sky! In its most iconic form, the snow-capped Mt. Fuji peeked at us from behind the hilltops surrounding Lake Kawaguchi, and boy was it a sight to behold. On this cloudless day, nothing could stop the sun from shining down on the lands with its enormous glow, which, for whatever reason, seemed to be amplified in this region of Japan. Indeed, it was a scene that truly earns Japan the title of “Land of the Rising Sun.”
The Volcano Look
Probably a little silly to call it “the volcano look” when Mt. Fuji quite literally is a volcano. However, one can’t deny that in the absence of the snowy peak, it looks more like a volcano than ever before! This is an exclusive appearance of Mt. Fuji that only ever occurs in the midst of summer when the temperature and humidity are high enough to affect even the highest of altitudes. Once the snow has melted away, what’s left is a green and brown rocky mountain that looks like something out of South America, making one ponder how a mountain’s entire vibe can change so drastically.
Nature’s Decoration
Autumn and spring are undoubtedly the most beloved seasons for visiting Japan. The ideal temperatures, weather conditions, and blooming flowers make the trip that much more comfortable, smoother, and scenic. It’s also a time when you can get unbeatable photos of Mt. Fuji with a framing of stunning autumn leaves or breathtaking cherry blossoms. The photo above is one of my proudest pictures I took in the autumn of 2022. What could easily pass as a fake AI-generated photo was impressively taken from behind the window of a moving bus. I guess when you’re snapping hundreds of photos in minutes, one is bound to be legendary!
The Mystery Mountain
A rather mysterious sight indeed, the nighttime silhouette of Mt. Fuji is a scene you can experience at any time of the year. The city lights of the Kawaguchi area and possibly the light emitted by the moon are enough to reveal the outline of the mountain. Its iconic shape is both eerie and alluring during the night, but as long as there is visibility, it can appear like this in any given season. You truly cannot go wrong with a trip to Mt. Fuji, no matter the time of year. All you need to do is keep an eye on its visibility status, and you’ll have a memorable experience – rain, hail, or shine!
