Arashiyama Monkey Park (Iwatayama) is Kyoto’s best hidden gem

Nestled in the forests of Mt. Arashiyama is a highly underrated attraction known as Iwatayama Monkey Park, a Kyoto classic!

Most refer to it as Arashiyama Monkey Park (even the pamphlets!), but the “official” name for this attraction is Iwatayama Monkey Park, a particular range located on Mt. Arashiyama.

Arashiyama is typically known for its iconic bamboo forest, but many people miss out on this hidden gem at Iwatayama when they visit the area with such a focused view (as Bruce Lee says: “Do not focus on the finger or you will miss all that heavenly glory!“).

With spectacular mountain views, city skylines, and enthusiastic monkeys in their natural habitat, there is plenty of heavenly glory at Arashiyama Monkey Park!

Getting To The Top!

Just along the Katsura River is the front ticket office to get into Arashiyama Monkey Park, costing 600 yen for adults and 300 yen for children.

It’s all uphill from there (literally) as you start to ascend the mountainous ranges of Mt. Arashiyama as you head to the region of Iwatayama.

As you get higher and higher up the mountain, you’ll be astonished at the view of Kyoto city that begins to form.

Not only that, but you’ll also see a few monkeys in their natural habitat, jumping from tree to tree and (hopefully playfully) fighting each other!

The Big Banana?

In Australia, we have a famous landmark called the “Big Banana” measuring in at 13 meters long and 5 meters high.

Well, this banana isn’t quite that big, but it sure makes for a great seat when looking out at Kyoto city’s mesmerizing landscapes!

It also really fits the theme of monkeys which I thought was hilarious and clever, though I never got a chance to sit on the ripe old banana chair as it gets quite crowded at Arashiyama Monkey Park.

Throwback To Nagano!

Indeed, the monkeys at Iwatayama bear a resounding resemblance to those at Nagano’s Snow Monkey Park.

Of course, it wasn’t snowing here in Arashiyama, but the look and personality of these monkeys were certainly identical to their Nagano counterparts!

These monkeys have absolutely no fear of human beings, but they also keep to themselves and mind their own business, so don’t be afraid to get up close with them!

From the stairs to the trees to the rooftops, these furry friends can be seen playing anywhere there is space!

A Fantastic Trip!

From its beautiful walking trails to its entertaining monkeys in their natural habitat, the cherry on top is really the astonishing view at the top of Mt. Arashiyama, featuring awesome photo subjects of monkeys on rooftops and a backdrop of the whole world!

The next time you’re in Arashiyama, don’t just stop at the bamboo grove! Check out Arashiyama Monkey Park and get an incredible view and unforgettable experience that you can cherish forever!
