Combini combinations – my recommended breakfast set

“Combinis” or convenience stores in Japan are known for low prices and nutritious foods. Here’s my special breakfast combini combination!

Mixed rice bowl

Protein and carbs are a must for a nutritious breakfast, so this mixed rice bowl comes with the works! Grilled salmon, prawn, egg omelet, pickled vegetables, and a naughty piece of fried kara-age chicken rest on a bed of steamed rice in this delicious boxed meal.

For the perfect start to the morning, this mixed rice bowl gives you the energy to get going. Packed with protein, carbs, and a bit of fat, you won’t be lacking in any department with this nutritious meal!

Available for just 400 JPY (approx.), this meal is compact, affordable, and delicious hot or cold! You can typically find this mixed rice bowl at a local 7-Eleven, Family Mart, or Lawson combini.

Mt. Rainer coffee varieties

No morning is complete without a cup of coffee, and after a delicious meal of rice and protein, it’s just what the doctor ordered! While most people would jump to the 7-Eleven coffee machine for a hot cup, I prefer to take the ice-cold route.

Japanese combinis are notorious for their huge selection of delicious refrigerated coffee beverages. If in season, I highly recommend Mt. Rainer’s “roast almond cafe latte” for a nutty flavor with a comforting aftertaste.

Mt. Rainer coffee varieties can typically be found in any combini across Japan and are available for about 200 JPY. For a stronger coffee hit, I’d recommend going for the “deep espresso” option to kick you into gear!

Ohayo milk pudding

While not absolutely necessary for a complete breakfast set, the Ohayo milk pudding is a great add-on for several reasons. Made mostly of Hokkaido milk, this soft, creamy, and delicious pudding gives you an extra hit of calcium to start your morning.

In addition, Ohayo milk pudding has just the right amount of sweetness to act as the “dessert element” to your breakfast without setting your stomach back. Available for less than 200 JPY, you can find this delicious milk pudding at just about any combini store.

Make your own combini combination!

There you have it! A combini breakfast combination that costs less than 1000 JPY, that is, less than 10 USD! You can mix and match whatever combinations you like, and unless you are absolutely starving, it’ll likely cost you less than 10 bucks.

Whether you walk into a 7-Eleven, Family Mart, or Lawson combini, you’ll find a huge selection of breakfast goods! From baked goods to boxed meals and gourmet coffees and desserts, there’s no combination you out of your reach!

Of course, if you are planning to visit Japan, you’ll need a way to get around the country as efficiently and affordably as possible. Japan Rail provides an abundance of travel passes to suit your travel needs. So whether you are traveling individually or as a group, the JR Pass is every traveler’s go-to for getting around and making the most of your time in Japan!
