A guide to Don Quijote – Japan’s biggest discount store chain

Don Quijote is essentially the Costco of Japan. You can find electronics, clothes, groceries, and more wherever you see the big blue penguin!

What is Don Quijote?

Don Quijote (pronounced “Don-ki-hou-teh”) was named after the protagonist of the novel by Miguel de Cervantes “Don Quixote.” Representing bravery, strength, and defiance towards unfair restrictions, the wholesale retailer strives to offer the best products and most extensive varieties at the lowest prices.

With over 160 stores across Japan, you’ll typically find a Don Quijote within several kilometers of your accommodation. They are easily recognizable by the big blue penguin mascot wearing a Santa Claus hat and the golden katakana ドン。キホーテ which spells out “Don Quijote.”

Multi-floored shopping paradise

Most Don Quijote stores are multi-leveled and can go as high as five or six floors. Each floor typically has a category or theme associated with it, such as clothing, food, or electronics.

It’s fairly easy to navigate your way around the store, even if you have limited Japanese-speaking ability. The steps aren’t too steep so it’s fairly easy to walk up and down, and there are also elevators available on every floor.

The vibe here is truly something to behold, with colorful posters, wacky adverts, and enthusiastic staff members that always put you in a good mood. In the background, you can hear the catchy Don Quijote theme song “Miracle Shopping” by Tanaka Maimi who was once a store employee.

A “Japanese Costco?”

In many ways, Don Quijote resembles a Japanese-style Costco because of its sheer product variety and bargain potential. The store may not be as “food-focused” as Costco, but it does offer more electronic and clothing goods than its American counterpart.

From televisions and kitchen appliances on one floor to cosmetics and fashion on the next, Don Quijote is your one-stop shop for all your daily living needs. You will typically find items in this store sold in bulk and at discounted prices, making it more cost-efficient than convenience stores for long-term stays in Japan.

While Don Quijote is often compared to Costco, you should keep in mind it is a totally different brand and has no affiliation with the American wholesale giant. With that said, Japan does have a few Costco stores across the country as well, though they can be difficult to find.

Health and Fitness

The section that stands out the most to me at Don Quijote is the health and fitness floor. You will find a combination of global brands as well as Japan-exclusive products here sold at the lowest prices in the country.

For gym fanatics, Don Quijote has everything you need in terms of protein supplements and performance enhancers. For home exercise, there is a great variety of workout equipment including weights, exercise balls, and pull-up bars that can get you started.

In addition to fitness products, there are also healthy lifestyle supplements such as multivitamins and herbal medicines available here. Don Quijote also offers treatments for body injuries, aches, and pains such as back pain tablets and deep heat packs.

Merchandise, souvenirs, and more!

The best part about Don Quijote is the experience that offers so much more than a standard shopping trip. I found myself visiting the store on many occasions without the intention of buying anything, but simply to enjoy the atmosphere.

Eventually, I caved in and bought this cool T-shirt souvenir featuring the iconic blue penguin “Donpen.” Other merchandise offered by the brand includes footwear, underwear, keychains, and plush toys.

So, whether you find yourself in Japan for a long or short stay, be sure to pop into your local Don Quijote for everything you need. If you’re a tourist, be sure to bring your passport to show the cashier for tax-free shopping!

Of course, if you are planning to visit Japan, you’ll need a way to get around the country as efficiently and affordably as possible. Japan Rail provides an abundance of travel passes to suit your travel needs. So whether you are traveling individually or as a group, the JR Pass is every traveler’s go-to for getting around and making the most of your time in Japan!
