To save you reading an entire article answering a yes or no question, the answer you’re after is YES, tap water is safe to drink in Japan.
Like many first-world countries, tap water is safe to drink in Japan. Whether it’s the tap in your home kitchen or hotel, or even the tap in the bathrooms, it is totally find to use them for filling up your water bottle or drinking straight from it. In fact, many restaurants serve complimentary water via tap, and knowing Japan’s high standards for hygiene, I think it’s safe to say that water is clean!
What about Rivers & Lakes?
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but not even the majestic waters of Mt. Fuji’s Lake Kawaguchi are clean enough for consumption. In fact, the general rule is that there are no safe rivers and lakes to drink from worldwide, no matter how crystal clear they look! Of course, you’re always welcome to risk it, though I’d only give it a try if you’re confident in the strength of your immune system. Personally, I’ve never drunk from a river or lake in Japan, though I do find running waters in natural environments like the waterfalls at Mt. Daimonji in Kyoto to be clean enough to at least wash my face.
Don’t share water with animals!
This is an obvious one, but definitely avoid drinking from, or even washing your hands or face with water that is used by the Japanese wildlife. Whether it’s the snow monkeys of Nagano or the deer of Nara, it’s best to steer clear of touching water that is used by animals (lord knows what’s in there!). Of course, dedicated outdoor onsens (Japanese hot springs) are perfectly fine for bathing in, as per their intended purpose; however, be sure not to drink from onsens either, as they are untreated for consumption.
So, is it safe to drink tap water in Japan?

As mentioned and to summarize, it’s absolutely fine to drink tap water in Japan, whether it’s at restaurants, cafes, or your chosen accommodation, so long as there’s no signage that tells you otherwise. Rivers and lakes require a little more thought, as you won’t always have signs telling you “do not drink,” but it’s best to avoid doing so anyway.
