The Kamo River or “Kamogawa” is the most significant river in Kyoto, running across the entire prefecture as a central place of gathering.
The Kamo River is a scenic spot in Kyoto and quite a popular central spot for both visitors and tourists in Japan. It stretches for 23 kilometers between north and south Kyoto and offers stunning views of flowing rivers and mountain backgrounds. Whether you’re here on holiday or living on a long-term basis, the Kamo River is always the place you want to be!
1. A Place of Rest
The sound of the mini waterfalls, the rustling of the trees against the wind, and the chirping of the birds make the Kamo River a calm and tranquil atmosphere for the senses. Indeed, it is an ideal place of rest that relieves the mind’s stress whether you’re on holiday or catching a break from work. As someone whose both worked and vacationed in Kyoto, I found myself constantly sitting by this beautiful river to calm my mind, be it from my busy hotel job or a busy holiday itinerary!
2. A Place of Magical Scenery
There is something truly magical about the Kamo River; its scenery gives me epic vibes like a cinematic clip from the Jurassic Park movies. Vast mountainous hilltops with thick green forests can even make the city of Kyoto feel like you’re out in the remote wilderness. The Kamo River really is a place of scenic beauty, with each step taking you to different sections and introducing new angles and perspectives.
3. A Place of Quiet Work
As you walk along the Kamo River, you may come across people sitting in solitude and working on their craft. During my many strolls here, I came across all kinds of conscientious individuals, including musicians, writers, and meditators, who were devoted to their craft and the joy that comes along with quiet, undisrupted workflow. I, myself, would bring my laptop and a takeaway coffee down here and find a quiet spot to do my writing, and boy, were they some of my most creative work sessions!
4. A Place of Natural Beauty
The beauty of the Kamo River stretches beyond the river itself, but also the gardens and trees alongside it. During spring, magnificent cherry blossom trees bloom on all sides, while autumn sees a colorful mix of golden brown and scarlet red momiji leaves. What’s awesome about the Kamo River is that there are so many different ways to experience it. You could walk from the upper-level and enjoy high-level views of the river, go downstairs and walk side-by-side with the flowing water, or simply chill out on one of the many bridges crossing for a complete river view.
5. A Place of Cherished Memories
The Kamo River was often a place of reunions and farewells during my time living in Kyoto. Friends and family from back home in Australia would meet up with me at this central spot, and we’d have dinner, share laughs, and ultimately farewell one another here. There’s no doubt the Kamo River holds a lot of cherished memories for me, and I’m sure it has done the same for many others who have been fortunate enough to experience this beautiful part of Japan.
