Known for its stunning beaches, the Big Buddha, and delicious ramen, there are so many reasons to visit Kamakura, Japan’s beachside paradise!
1. The “Slam Dunk” Spot!

If you’re a fan of the famous Slam Dunk anime, then this spot in Kamakura surely stirs something in you. In the opening sequence, the protagonist Sakuragi Hanamichi is seen standing by this railway crossing, waving to his love interest, Haruko Akagi, standing on the other side. In the background is the iconic Kamakura beach with its brilliant, glistening ocean and scenic islands. Seeing the real-life spots of nostalgic anime scenes certainly hits a chord with fans of the iconic basketball anime (myself included), but even if you’re a non-fan, it’s still a majestic spot to visit! You may also find it amusing to see all the global fans crowding the area for that iconic photo shot by the crossing!
2. The Daibutsu (Big Buddha)

The Daibutsu or “Big Buddha” statue in Kamakura is one of the three largest Buddha statues in Japan. It’s a beautiful area surrounded by stunning trees, and the statue itself is massive and enchanting in its presence. It costs just 300 yen to enter the grounds of the Daibutsu, and you can perform prayers at the statue and surrounding shrines as desired. I have a particular recommendation to visit during autumn when the surrounding trees take on colorful shades of red, gold, and green, adding to the breathtaking aesthetic and tranquil vibes of this cultural landmark in Kamakura.
3. Ramen & Gyoza!

Japan is full of amazing ramen restaurants, but eating it with ocean views at Kamakura is a totally superior experience! I had the privilege of having Ippudo just opposite the road from Kamakura Beach. While this restaurant is a well-known franchise that you’ll find everywhere in Japan, this particular branch was so beautifully designed, from the beachy interior to the Mediterranean-esque exterior. As for the food itself, absolutely delectable. The gyoza was so juicy, crunchy, and full of flavor, while the ramen broth was thick and soothing for the soul.
4. Sparkly Beaches

The sparkly blue beaches of Kamakura are truly a sight to behold. Simply walking or cycling along the beach may prove to be one of the simplest yet memorable moments of your time in Japan (I know it was for me!). Although I come from Australia, one of the global hotspots for the “best beaches in the world,” something about Kamakura Beach just hits different for me. Perhaps it’s the Japan aesthetic with its unique mountainous landscapes, or maybe it’s the calm and tranquil vibes as a result of Japanese culture, but whatever it is, you certainly don’t get the same feeling with Aussie beaches!
5. Matcha Sensations!

One of the best iced matcha drinks I’ve had in Japan was at this little store called Kamakura Chacha. Located at the beautiful Kamakura railway station (which is an experience in itself), you can grab one of these green tea sensations and enjoy it at the iconic clock tower by the platforms. There are also several nice ice cream shops which make for great summer refreshers while soaking up the sun at this beachside heaven. I recommend the matcha soft-serve, of course (after all, you’re in Japan!) for a sweet (and slightly bitter) treat that’s full of metabolism-activating antioxidants!
