Sometimes, one day is all you need to absorb the essence and atmosphere of a city, and that’s certainly possible with a place like Osaka!
Osaka is one of those cities that’s fairly easy to cover its main attractions in a day or two. If you’re particularly short on time and only have a day to spare in this wonderful city, then look no further than this one-day guide to Japan’s most outgoing city!
Start The Day @ Dotonbori River
The typical Osaka itinerary will have the Dotonbori area saved for the night when everything comes to life. However, seeing the Dotonbori River in the early hours of the morning is something special. The calm waters can more clearly be seen and appreciated without the hindrance of the neon lights, and the atmosphere is much more peaceful, though with a bit of a hangover vibe (you’ll likely see a few empty beer cans around).
Late Morning Stroll @ Kuromon Market
The famous Kuromon Market in Osaka opens at 9 am, so that’s typically a good time to head down there while the seafood is fresh! This massive alley of street food has enthusiastic sellers bringing to you premium salmon sashimi straight from the ocean, among many other classic Japanese seafood dishes such as oden, teriyaki eel, and takoyaki.
Lunch It Up @ Rikuto’s Place!
Not far from the Dotonbori River is a small and humble shop called Rikuto’s Place that sells burgers and fried chicken. This might not be what you’d have thought to try in Osaka, but trust me when I say this burger is utterly life-changing. To this day, I’ve yet to find a fried chicken burger that hits as hard as this Chinese-owned burger shop in Osaka. Something about the flavors they used was like utter ecstasy to the taste buds (I just hope there weren’t any drugs in there!). Anyway, you would’ve had a good fix of local Osakan food at Kuromon market, so nothing wrong with a cheeky burger for lunch, right?
Afternoon Visit to Osaka Castle
It’s not a complete Osaka trip without admiring the architectural astonishment of Osaka Castle! This is the only time you’ll need to catch a train during your one-day stay in Osaka, after all, I’m trying to keep travel time to a minimum here! This one is totally worth it, though, and it’s best to visit Osaka Castle during the daylight when it’s clearly visible (anyway, the grounds close at 6 pm, so you can’t leave it too late, regardless!).
At Long Last, Dotonbori!
The part you’ve been waiting for is here. Your one-day Osaka itinerary finishes strong with an evening spent at the prefecture’s most famous district – Dotonbori! Indeed, this vibrant area is home to the best street foods and local delicacies Osaka has to offer. It’s also an absolute spectacle of bright neon lights, wacky pop-out ads, and fun activities like arcades, traditional Japanese archery, and street performances like dancers, singers, and magicians!
