Hiroshima’s Peace Memorial Park is a place of remembrance for the fallen, and its surrounding natural beauty seems to be a gift from God.
Some places are just blessed by the heavens when it comes to natural beauty, and Hiroshima’s Peace Memorial Park is a perfect example. Since sustaining so much damage from the atomic bombs of World War II, it has grown to a thriving city of love, life, and enchanting scenery. If not for the history books, no one would know the destructive past that this city faced, and in a way, it’s a poetic metaphor for life, inspiring us to transcend our broken pasts and curate a beautiful future.
Stunning Walkways
The surrounding walkways at Peace Memorial Park are abundant with tall, magnificent trees and scenic views of Hiroshima city. The path is split to allow walkers and cyclists alike, and you’ll often find elderly people strolling along for their morning walk or cycle, and paying their respects through Shinto prayers. On a nice day, the sun shines brightly to illuminate the natural surroundings, giving life to what was once a desolate area of horrifying tragedy.
Beautiful Rivers
The Motoyasu and Honkawa rivers surround the Peace Memorial Park much like a castle’s moat, passing through beautiful bridges and flowing to and from the mountainous regions beyond. From the bridge, you can capture an iconic view of the river extending into the mountains with the Genbaku Dome peeking out from the lush green trees.
Lovely Autumn Trees
Speaking of trees, you’ll find plenty of them throughout Peace Memorial Park, featuring many different species. During autumn, the golden brown and red momiji leaves start to bloom, adding an element of color and life to the vicinity. It’s beautiful to see how these trees so full of life have grown around the Genbaku Dome, a statement of Japan’s will to live through the toughest of times and a symbol of eternal life that persists in the face of death.
