Do I need to know Japanese to visit Japan?

Given the vast numbers of foreign tourists that visit Japan each year, the obvious answer might seem like a no, but that’s not entirely true.

It’s an interesting question that often circulates around the Internet. Here’s my honest take as a foreign resident in Japan for 3 years.
